Wheels for Shyla
Donation protected
Our daughter, Shyla, has been confined to a wheelchair since the age of 4.
When Shyla was born, she was such a happy and peaceful baby, always smiling. At around 6 months old she started missing milestones here and there, which was cause for concern. By 18 months old she started losing skills that were previously learned, such as standing, walking, talking, eating, and using her hands. Shortly after her 2nd birthday, she was diagnosed with Rett syndrome.
Rett syndrome is a rare neurological disorder caused by a gene mutation, that occurs primarily in girls and more rarely in boys. 1 in 10,000 every year.
We have managed to get by for so many years with the way we transport her, lifting her in and out of the car seat and breaking down the wheelchair and lifting it into the vehicle. Now, at 21 years old and weighing 80 lbs, it has become increasingly difficult for us to keep this up. It takes two people to lift her wheelchair and we do not always have help around. Adam and I both have herniated discs in our backs and I have dislocated my knee twice from picking her up, but we don't have a choice. It has to be done, so we do it.
Since graduating from school last year, Shyla has barely left the house. It is so unfair to her that she is not able to go out and enjoy life like everyone else, because of transporting issues. Just one trip to the doctor means lifting her and the chair at least four times. If it's a long trip, eating lunch or going to the bathroom is not easy at all and sometimes not even an option. It is exhausting!
We are in dire need of a wheelchair accessible van! Having one will not only help with transporting her, but will also give us a place to change her when we go out. It is very disgusting and degrading having to lay her on the floor of a public bathroom!
We are humbly and graciously asking for a monetary donation to help fund the conversion on a van that we purchase. The type of conversion that we are looking to do is around $22,000. We are not asking for all of that, only as much as possible to help make it more attainable by us. We would be grateful for anything, even $1 will get us that much closer to our goal.
With hope and prayer, may you find it in your hearts to help us to continue providing Shyla with the best life possible. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
