Meet Emmi, our unstoppable 5 year old who lives with a rare genetic condition that affects every aspect of her daily life. But, if you know her, you’ll know that it doesn’t define her. She loves the beach, tearing up the skate park in her wheelchair, and waving at everyone she passes while cruising with her dad on their coast runs. She may not speak with words, but she has an incredible way of connecting with people and bringing joy wherever she goes.

However, behind these beautiful moments is a growing challenge our family is facing.

As Emmi gets bigger and heavier, so does the amount of specialised equipment she needs to stay safe and supported. Her wheelchair, gait trainer, seating supports and other equipment no longer fit safely in a standard vehicle. Lifting her in and out of the car has become physically demanding and risky and we are constantly trying to avoid bumping her head or causing discomfort, while also putting strain on our own bodies. Often it can just be all too hard and we end up staying home.

So, this year, we’re taking part in the HBF Run for a Reason, not only to celebrate her unstoppable spirit, but also to raise funds for something that will change our lives.

A wheelchair-accessible vehicle would allow Emmi to remain safely in her wheelchair while travelling, accommodate all of her specialised equipment, and give our family the ability to continue accessing the community without fear or risk. It would mean more freedom, more inclusion, and more of the life she loves so deeply.

Every donation, every share, and every word of encouragement brings us one step closer to giving our little adventurer the safe and accessible transport she deserves.
