In Feb 2021 a number of our skydiving friends were caught in the back of an aeroplane that crash-landed. While all of them were banged up pretty bad, two had to be airlifted for emergency treatment, and of these two, our friend Attie suffered the most grievous injuries, resulting in a quadriplegic diagnosis.
Over the past two years he has fought back strong; vigorously engaging with his physio, gym and wheelchair rugby sessions. With life! And doing plenty additional home-practice exercises. He is an example of determination and inspiration to many of us, bearing his new circumstances with a gritty and positive attitude; keeping his chin up (nearly) all of the time.
While he has many challenges in his new world, and more to come; one that is glaring is his limited transportation-mobility. He has a car, somewhat aged now, but this is not modified in a way that enables him to drive himself. So when his excellent caregiver – Elliot – is on a break or unavailable, Attie cannot move from home – impacting all of his rehab, social and future work opportunities.
We all come from different backgrounds and means, and Attie’s reality is that his are more stressed than some, and all the more so now. It is simply outside of his budget to upgrade or renew his car.
The objective of this campaign is to secure the full funding necessary to achieve the following:
- 1. Have his disability assessed by a professional who can then advise on the specific vehicle modifications he requires to drive safely [DONE]
- 2. Purchase a set of driving lessons that will teach him the new driving method, as well as the mechanisms for efficient entry and exit from the vehicle, storage of wheelchair and any other equipment [SECURED]
- 3. Purchase of a new or near-new, carefully selected vehicle that is most suited, within budget, to his needs
- 4. Purchase the specific modifications that are necessary for him to safely and consistently operate the vehicle
- 5. Insurance and maintenance expense on the vehicle for a period of at least a few years
If we can be successful with this campaign, and ultimately secure the full purchase 1-5 above, this will profoundly impact his world by creating a significant level of independence for him, ongoing – and also certainly boost his morale in the short and medium term with the obvious evidence that there are people out there prepared to get behind him.
It is our intention to share the financial / bank statements associated with this campaign here on this portal, or/and make them available to any donor at anytime, in order that all donors can be clear that money received has been spent correctly and exclusively on this project.
