Wheels for Alaysia: Help Us Get to Kindy

Hi, I’m Liselle – mum to my amazing 4-year-old daughter Alaysia.

Alaysia is full of life, loves learning, and uses a power wheelchair to explore the world. She’s currently in kindy and absolutely loves it – the friends, the fun, and the chance to grow her independence.

We’re raising funds to cover wheelchair-accessible taxi transport for Alaysia to get to and from kindy 3 times a week for the rest of the school year which is 30 weeks.

Alaysia lives with a rare physical disability called MYH7 related congenital myopathy which affects her strength and mobility. She also has scoliosis, hip dysplasia and other structural challenges, which means she needs extra support for her posture and comfort throughout the day.

Alaysia’s kindy is such an important part of her life. It helps her learn, play, socialize and grow her independence. But getting her there safely has become a challenge.

Up until recently, I was transporting Alaysia to kindy myself and bringing her Wizzybug, which is a much lighter entry-level power chair. It weighs around 30kg and is designed for younger kids, but it has limited seating support and no custom adjustments.

Alaysia has now received her new, custom-built power chair, which is much heavier (around 180kg) but gives her the best support she needs as she grows. It has a special seating system, tilt and lift adjustments, pressure management so she can be comfortable and supported for longer periods.

This new chair has made a big difference for her – but it also means I can no longer lift and transport it the way I could with her smaller Wizzybug.

Until our car can be modified through NDIS to carry her new chair, wheelchair-accessible taxis are the only safe and realistic option to get her to kindy.

We are currently waiting for NDIS vehicle modification funding, which will allow me to have our car modified for wheelchair access. Unfortunately, this process takes time – and in the meantime, wheelchair taxis are our only safe option.

Wheelchair taxis are quite costly, with each round trip to kindy adding up quickly over the weeks. For 3 days per week over 30 weeks, we’re hoping to raise enough to cover this transport so she doesn’t miss out on kindy while we wait for our vehicle to be modified.

Our goals is to raise $7,140 to cover safe, accessible taxi rides to kindy for 30 weeks.

With your help Alaysia will be able to attend kindy, ensure she can travel safely and comfortably in her new chair, eases the physical strain of lifting and carrying her, which is no longer safe.
