In 2011 our world fell apart when our son Tom was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystropy (DMD), a 100% fatal, muscle wasting disorder. DMD is slowly robbing Tom of his physical abilities so that he now finds it difficult to run. He can no longer climb stairs. He has a manual wheelchair but unfortunately these, as well as power wheelchairs, cannot go on uneven terrain. This summer showed us that unless Tom's dad carries him, his days of visiting beaches, woodland, fields and grassy places are numbered. This is especially hard on an outdoorsy, free-range child who currently at the age of 7 remains blissfully unaware that over the next 10 years he will become almost totally paralysed and probably not live beyond his 20s.
Enter the Terrain Hopper Mini - an amazing off road wheelchair with all the capability of a spec'ed up Land Rover! This can be operated with the lightest of joystick controls, can easily negotiate all terrain and has even been taken up mountains! Of all the bits of disabled kit we have seen and trialled, we believe this is the one piece of equipment that will enable Tom to continue experiencing life outdoors with his sister and friends for years to come.
But with all things specialist, the Terrain Hopper comes in at a hefty £12,500. As a family we will be doing all we can to raise this money by saving, ebaying our unwanted items, selling Tom's special bike he can no longer ride very well and his dad doing as many night shifts at work as he can humanely manage.
