Let's Get These Wheels Rollin'!

In June of 2008, the Saifee Family was blessed by the birth of twin boys who would be joining an older brother.  In time, the family learned that the twins were born with a form of Muscular Dystrophy called Duchenne Muscular Dystophy.  Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness.

Over the summer, both boys lost their ability to walk.  The Saifees had been hopeful, and believed the twins still had a few more years before losing this ability, but it happened much sooner than expected.  Since late summer, the boys have been in temporary wheelchairs while waiting for their new motorized, wheelchairs to be built.

Since school started, the boys have had to rely on parents, friends, and staff at Glebe to push their temporary wheelchairs.  The boys have not been able to fully participate in PE, recess, or simply move around the classroom.

In late October, the family was notified that the motorized wheelchairs were ready, and on November 1—earlier than hoped for—two new motorized wheelchairs were delivered to the Saifees.  The chairs are sleek and handsome, and everyone is eager for the twins to use them.

Unfortunately, the boys can’t use their new chairs because their home doesn’t have a wheelchair ramp.  Mom and dad have been told they need about $15,000 to build a secure and safe ramp that will be ADA compliant for their home.

We would like to raise as much of the $15,000 that we can to help the Saifees, and to give our fourth grade twins freedom and independence again.
