Please Help Local Disabled Veteran

Jamie is a retired disabled veteran who has been wheelchair-bound with Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis since 2010. Being a F-16 Crew Chief, he has always been the rock in any given situation and would never ask for a handout himself. Hence, my submitting this request on his behalf.

To say that it's been a constant battle with the VA since his return from deployment is an understatement. As I'm sure many unfortunate veterans can attest to. Even though Jamie is 100% Disabled according to the VA, he is constantly denied needed assistance from Montgomery and/or Atlanta due to some loophole or another. After having to take out a sizable loan for a desperately needed wheelchair van (another battle with the VA) our funds are exhausted. No matter how many VA Birmingham doctors and specialists attest to Jamie's need, we have been fighting the bureaucracy for over ten years now. A few we win but the adaptive housing assistance has been a losing battle for about two years now.

It tears my heart out to hear him say that he feels he's been forgotten. Or that he feels trapped in his own home. His motorized wheelchair gets torn up trying to move from room to room due to thresholds being uneven and too small for a wheelchair. He is constantly falling while trying to transfer himself in the bathroom. With all the sharp edges we try to cover but we are both terrified that the next fall will be the one he doesn't get up from.

We have exhausted all other avenues and are asking for help from y'all to give a disabled veteran back his freedom. The money we raise will go towards adapting our house for his wheelchair. Making doorways and thresholds accessible. Giving him needed sink adaptation so he doesn't have to strain his already worn out MS body to simply brush his teeth. Allow him to transfer easily without worrying about falling and injuring himself. In short, we are on a fixed income and cannot afford the needed construction without your help.

Since the VA has been stringing us along for two years now, funds are needed ASAP. The falls are increasing as Jamie's strength is decreasing. All of this has worn him out emotionally, physically, and mentally.

Please donate what you can to let a beloved disabled war veteran know that we still care.

Thank you,
