Wheelchair Accessible RV For Derrick
Donation protected
I am raising money to purchase a wheelchair accessible RV for my brother in law, Derrick. Derrick became disabled due to a congenital malformation in a blood vessel in his brain. The vessel could have been fine for his entire life without incident, but one day in 1992 when he was just 17 years old the vessel burst. Derrick was in a coma for three months and the prognosis didn't look good. Despite all indicators to the opposite, Derrick woke up and while he couldn't see or move his entire body, his memory and cognitive abilities were perfect! Fast forward 26 years later, after getting married to a wonderful woman (something he thought he would never do), battling bouts of pneumonia, a lightning strike and a tornado destroying his home, Derrick is doing great and he has an amazing 10 year old son. They have been able to do a little travelling, but his medical needs restrict him from travelling by air due to cost of taking an oxygen tank on an airplane. Derrick has a compromised respiratory system and that means he will become ill after travelling on an airplane. What is an uncomfortable 7 days with a cold for us could mean a hospital stay for Derrick. Making arrangements for supplies and equipment from home health agencies is a nightmare with companies not wanting to arrange for his supplies to go to another address. The last trip they took, they carried an 100 lb tank of liquid oxygen in the back of their car, which was not only heavy but dangerous, plus a oxygen concentration machine. I'm not sure if you've ever dealt with any type of home health company, but they treat their clients as though they are home bound without any desire to go outside or go anywhere and do something and they shouldn't expect to do anything or go anywhere. The first question is always who are they going to bill for additional supplies, it's never how they can assist in Derrick's planning for his needs away from home. Having a RV would mean that Derrick and his family could pack up and go! Not to have to worry about the equipment and supplies that he needs for his day to day cares and comfort getting where they need to be. Derrick could rest on his ventilator when he gets tired as he travels, and have all the supplies he needs to stay healthy. One of Derrick's dreams would be to take his son on trips around the country, seeing the National Parks and Spring Training. Derrick was incredibly athletic before his injury, playing baseball in high school. His son has inheirited his love of baseball. Having an accessible RV would be his son having the experiences that he had as a kid! Having a RV to travel in would mean that Derrick would always have accessible accommodations where ever he went and he could go anywhere he wanted to take his family. Over the years, Derrick has never let his disability bring him down. His has a strong faith in God and he works hard everyday to stay healthy and strong. With help from you, we will be able to order the RV and have it late summer/early fall. The amount I am asking for will cover the cost of a Winnebago Navian or similar model RV with accessibility modifications for wheelchair platform lift, wheelchair tie downs, roll in bathroom and passage ways. The sleeping areas would also be modified to accommodate Derrick's ventilator and oxygen tanks. Any remaining money would be used for Derrick's needs at home. Support from all of you would mean the world to Derrick. He has wanted to be able to travel for so long, and it would be a dream come true if he could! Thank you so much for considering donating to Derrick. God Bless you and yours!
