Wheel chair cart for Paralyzed Great Dane Hotchner
Donation protected
So many people have asked about Hotchner.
He'still paralyzed. No attempts to get up since that one time.
We've upped his meds and he is running a second course of antibiotics. I wish I could say this was an inexpensive adventure but just one of the meds alone is nearly $600. Not complaining, he is worth every penny.
Special thanks to one of my friends who is donating cases of wee-wee pads as we are going through 30-50 a day (remember he is 200 lbs!) No, he is not losing his dignity, he still wags his tail and demands his ear scratches.
We use tons of baby powder, blankets and paper towels: so off to the store soon for more of those. It's important to keep his elbows and hocks (hind 'knees') off the wood floor to avoid any sores.
With all the rain, snow and mud, it's hell keeping blankets and floors dry and his 3 buddies are insistent to keep checking on him so I have 10,000 blankets to wash lol
We've had no luck trying out any diapers on him, none are working. He is awesome about rolling over to change the pads and clean him as needed.
He is on distilled water only.
He eats, drinks and takes his meds just fine. He is still in good spirits.
We have finally decided to fund-raise for a quad cart to get him up to better move him around and maybe get him to move his legs more, but finding one at any price within reason has been a flop.
So here is the fundraiser so many have asked me to do in order to get a quad cart. The price of the fundraiser is the exact cost of the cart.
When talking to the cart company, they have explained that due to his size, the cart will need to be special designed and it's cost will be $1211.00
We will build him a ramp so he can get outside. I had hopes he would get up but because he has not and still loves life, we need to avoid any organ problems with longer down time, a cart will help get him "moving".
None of us are giving up on him. He got through one spinal stroke as a pup, he can hopefully do it again.
If he can, he waits until I get in there and we can make sure all the pads are changed when he 'goes' so that is also good news: he does have bladder control of some kind. That is hopeful.
Thank you everyone for asking about him and caring about how he is doing.
We love this big guy!
