Wheel and Turn Fundraiser for Windsor Fringe

What would you ask someone you look up to, if you had the chance to meet them, break bread with them, drink tea with them?

Hello! My name is Nadia L. Hohn. I am an author and educator, musician and now, playwright. I am raising funds for my play Wheel and Turn. The funds raised will help to cover any other expenses for this play-- payment for actors and team, travel, accommodations, props, and tech.

Hist'ry
I wrote and staged my first short plays as a high school student back in the 1990s. Over the years, I wrote a few short plays but that stopped until I began writing for children. Eventually, I became a children's book author which fulfilled my childhood dream. Today, I am an author of eleven books for young people.

I have always had a love for theatres and plays. They presented an opportunity to go on a journey with characters. As my books were published, I took playwriting classes and attended a lot of plays. I began to think of each one as a stage production. In 2020, I went back to graduate school-- a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at the University of Guelph. While there, I took Writing for Stage taught by esteemed Canadian playwright, Judith Thompson. She gave us an assignment to write then perform a monologue, then turn it into a play. Wheel and Turn was born.

With Judith's encouragement, I began to pursue more opportunities for Wheel and Turn. I submitted one scene to Working the Scene in Colour 2024 and it was selected. Actors brought my words to life in virtual reading. A huge honour!

As an elementary school teacher, I have staged a few plays. In 2023, I helped staged a musical play that I wrote starring my students. I wrote Wheel and Turn w play was selected by lottery for the first ever Windsor Fringe Festival July 24-27, 2025.

Synopsis
After Aya, a young teacher and writer, overcomes cancer, her wheels take her on a transformative journey to Africa. But when she (re)turns home, she is heartbroken by a devastating series of events. Depressed and uninspired, she throws herself into a project— research about Jamaican poet and playwright, Louise Bennett Coverley. The surprise that comes may be just the thing she needs to heal her heart. Check out this semi-autobiographical theatre debut written by and featuring beloved author Nadia L. Hohn.

History
It is a huge honour for me to have Wheel and Turn selected for the Windsor Fringe.

It was inspired by a moment that I had while researching my book, A LIKKLE MISS LOU: How Jamaican Poet Louise Bennett Coverley Found Her Voice.

Wheel and Turn tells the story and that of so many women who have gone through life, grieving losses, mourning closed doors, rewriting their stories... Wheel and Turn gives them voice.
