Growing up, my younger brother Mike was a natural athlete. He excelled at gymnastics, skateboarding and mixed martial arts (before it was cool). Bruce Lee was always his idol and things seemed to come to him effortlessly.
Now, my hardworking brother, who is an entrepreneur and a self-employed husband and father of two sons (one of whom is Autistic) was recently injured in a work accident while hanging signs. His L1 vertebrae burst into his spinal cord, requiring emergency surgery. He is now in a rehab facility, facing the possibility of disability and long-term pain management. His determination has him fighting for mobility each day, despite excruciating pain.
Obviously he is unable to work while recovering from this tragedy. His wife works part-time in their rural small town where she is desperately searching for full-time work while attending school, caring for their children, and now adjusting to life as a caregiver. Their house was mid-remodel and his in-laws have generously built a stable entry deck, unsure of whether he'll need a wheelchair ramp for his return home, whenever that may be.
Without his income, his family is unable to pay their monthly bills, not to mention that without insurance or workman's compensation, they will also be facing unimaginable medical bills when all is said and done. All of this adds to his emotional stress as he struggles to recover.
I live 3,000 miles away and there's nothing I'd love more than to be by his bedside, holding his hand, but the best I can do is to call upon our community to help ease my brother's burden in this desperate time.
No amount is too small. I believe together we can make a huge difference in this family's life. Thank you.
"If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them."
