WHAT'S MY SIGN AGAIN? - A CSU Thesis Film
Donation protected
Astrology is easily more relevant in pop culture today than decades prior. With the advent of dating apps, the search to find someone compatible is more desirable than ever before. While things like astrology are fun to participate in, this and various other dating labels are treated as “deal breakers” to some. In some situations, this could prohibit a genuine connection from being formed.
Student film, “What’s My Sign Again?”, focuses on the absurdity of this idea. Upon discovering his crush obsessively worships astrology, a high school nerd sets out to build a star-altering device to make them compatible.
This film is the passion project of director, Richard J. Bryer, who has directed several other student films including “CHARGER”, which was funded and released through a successful GoFundMe campaign. With “What’s My Sign Again?”, he wishes to make a piece that resonates with those who have struggled to connect with someone due to superficial dating labels placed on them in society.
Drawing inspiration from various high school teen comedies, “What’s My Sign Again?” centers around falling in love for superficial reasons. Playing off the trope of “boy gets girl in the end”, Eric and April feel like they need a date to the dance because it's what the John Hughes formula has conditioned us to believe. Many of the most popular high school films share themes of acceptance, popularity, and individualism, which are portrayed through the characters of “What’s My Sign Again?” as they discover that they don’t have to be anyone else but their true selves.
To elevate this film, funds will be needed for craft services, props, special fx makeup, and location fees.
