What Really Went Wrong: Original Short Film

Intro:

Hey Everyone!

We are Southlight Studios, a group of student filmmakers from Somerset. We’re seeking to crowdfund part of the production of our new thriller short film What Really Went Wrong. Our previous films PTSD, Project: Joker and the newly completed Variant, have gone on to be selected for international competitions, and listed on IMDb. We have big plans for the future to continue creating, and pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve both creatively and technically.

WRWW is our first step on this path, a 20-minute psychological thriller that delves into the twisted and intricate relationship between Jace and Nicolas. The film follows the grieving and emotionally volatile Jace, seeking answers about the mysterious death of his beloved wife. Consumed by grief and driven by the need for justice, he becomes fixated on uncovering the truth behind her untimely demise.

As Jace's investigation unfolds, he becomes increasingly convinced that Nicolas, a charismatic and manipulative doctor, holds the key to the mystery. Despite having little connection to Jace's wife beyond being her doctor during medical procedures, Nicolas presents a charming and social facade to the world. However, beneath his amiable exterior, Nicolas hides a sinister manipulative character who relishes playing with the emotions of others.
The film takes a suspenseful turn as Jace kidnaps and interrogates Nicolas. In an intense and psychological battle of wits, Jace attempts to extract the truth from Nicolas, believing that he may be involved in his wife's death. Throughout their intense conversation, Jace presents evidence of Nicolas's manipulative tendencies and uncovers his connections to questionable individuals.

As the story unfolds, Nicolas expertly deflects accusations, leaving the audience uncertain about his true intentions and involvement in the tragic event. The film skillfully keeps viewers on edge, questioning the credibility of both characters and creating an atmosphere of doubt and suspense.

Through a series of flashbacks, the audience gains insight into Jace's loving memories of his wife, painting a poignant picture of their relationship. These glimpses into the past juxtaposed with Nicolas's seemingly casual and minimal interactions with Jace's wife, leave room for doubt and speculation about the extent of Nicolas's guilt.

Inspiration:

We wanted the film to coincide with films and TV shows within the psychological thriller and neo-noir genres. This led us to take inspiration from films such as Prisoners and Seven, as well as certain episodes from Black Mirror.
Some of the shots from films that inspired this project are shown below:

Meet the team:

Southlight Studios
Our core group consists of 4 film & drama students whose skills seem to combine like a jigsaw puzzle to cover the filmmaking process, from acting, directing, writing, cinematography, and post-production.

Dominic Goudarzi

Dom has been acting from a young age, playing in a multitude of roles ranging from comedic relief to complete psychopaths. For WRWW Dom is taking on the role of both Writer & Director, as well as playing the role of Jace, heading up both the narrative and creative decisions in the production process. He recently has been accepted into the world leading organization the National Youth Theatre, which aims to develop young people through the creative arts and theatrical productions.

Finn Irving

Finn is an enthusiastic cinematographer, who has either directed or shot all of our previous films, and has a real eye for detail. He was also offered a place at the National Youth Film Academy, a highly competitive programme with the aim of developing the skill of young filmmakers. He is also a talented musician and will be working on the score for this project. With access to more capable equipment, WRWW will showcase the best of his abilities and help convey the film from a deeper perspective, as Director of Photography for the project.

Devyn Sharpe

Dev has a seemingly unlimited inventory of technical skills, and is always first to come up with solutions when a problem arises. He’s worked on our previous films PTSD and Variant and is an indispensable member of the team. His main role will be as assistant camera tech, as well as a producer for the film.

Isaac Hines

Isaac is an aspiring Actor who gained a place in the National Youth Theatre in 2022. He has played various roles in plays, musicals and short films, ranging from Bodyguards and the leader of a rebellion to a Kidnapper and a raging Alcoholic, he also auditioned for Young Harry in Season 6 of the Crown. In this Short film he has taken on the role of one of the main characters, while also assisting with other aspects of the production process.

How will the funds be used?

The funds we raise through GoFundMe will be used to cover technical expenses such as equipment hire, as well as props like the tape machine, and make-up & special effects.

Festivals?

We intend to enter the film into qualifying festivals, both local and international, in the hopes of gaining recognition in the indie-filmmaking community, and continuing our journey as a group of filmmakers.
