Please help the Whale family to continue their utmost support during Cindy's battle with SJS/TEN

SJS/TEN is a very rare, acute, serious, and potentially fatal skin reaction in which there is sheet-like skin and mucosal loss. It is nearly always caused by medications.
SJS/TEN is a very rare complication of medication use (estimated to be 1-2/million each year for SJS, and 0.4-1.2/million each year for TEN). But anyone on medication can develop SJS/TEN unpredictably. It can affect all age groups, both sexes and all races.

How did this happen!?

Cindy and Brock were visiting friends on the island, near Comox, BC, when Cindy started to feel flu-like symptoms start to hit her body. Family was worried and asked if she needed to go see a doctor and she refused (as stubbourn Cindy does) and went and layed down. After sometime , Cindy felt something was seriously wrong and asked to be taken the to ER. It was there at the ER in Comox her condition worsened and the facility could no longer help her situation. They airlifted her to the Victoria Royal Jubilee Hospital where she was put into isolation at the ICU.
It was there that her friends and family learnt that she had SJS/TEN which was due to a  horrific allergic reaction to medication she was taking that caused her to lose the whole first layer of her skin. The nurses and doctors have treated her like a burn victim since and have been trying to  keep her as comfortable as possible.

What is she like now?

Cindy is in a medically indused coma so she can be as comfortable as possible during these trying times. The doctors are trying to keep everything stable so her body can fight infection and regenerate her skin. She lost almost 100% of her skin and the doctors say that for every 1% of skin lost it takes 1.5 days to regenerate (we are looking at minimum 100-150 days of skin recovery). She has lost all of her finger and toe nails, she loses her body heat quite easily and has something called a BairHug (warm air pocket around her) and she bleeds alot as there is no skin to protect her. As of the other evening, she now has a tracheodomy so her mouth can start to heal from the horrible blood clots and infections. We stay positive everyday that her organs remain functional and her blood pressure stable so sooner than later she can slowly come out of her coma and her body can work on its own.

This syndrome is not easy to deal with as a patient, doctor, nurse or family member. One of her Doctor's has been in the ICU for 17 years and has never seen anything like this. I cannot describe the sights we have seen Cindy go through and are extremely hopeful she will pull through!

This page is to help our family be there in support for Cindy as everyday is a battle and we just hope she remains stable enough to come out of her coma. We are thankful for any donation as all proceeds will be going towards our Ferry fares, 1-2 accomodation in Victoria for her husband, daughter and son, food and help with airfares for her family to come and support as well.

This will be an extremely long process and hope she becomes stable enough to eventually make it to Vancouver where she can be with her community.

All of the thanks in the world!! Cindy is a beautiful and fiesty woman, if anyone can beat this, I know it can be her!

Much love, The Whale Pod
