My Dad Jim Sherman has spent over half of his life giving back to his community. He started out as my first manager in San Lorenzo Little League. He kept coaching and also holding other positions like equipment manager and umpire in chief long after I aged out as a player. To so many of these kids he was a coach, teacher, friend and father figure. During this time, there were rumors that our Little League fields were going to be sold, so he ran for a position on the San Lorenzo Homes Association Board of Directors, the group that owned the property. He was elected and continued to be elected for the next 24 years. He always tried to do what was best for his community, especially the children of San Lorenzo. After he finally was defeated nearly a quarter century later, he decided to run for a position on the San Lorenzo School Board and was elected for a four year term. He visited school campuses daily, so if there was a problem or question, he was there to do the best he could to resolve or answer it. During all of this, if a kid needed baseball equipment, school supplies, lunch money, anything, he always was there for them.
This man who has always been there for anybody who needed him, needs some BIG HELP himself.
On May 22nd, my wife found him on the floor at his house. He was not in good shape and was taken by ambulance to Eden Hospital. His condition in the ER became worse and I was told that he might not make it through the tests that he needed. He was diagnosed with a sepsis infection, he developed severe pnumonia and had suffered a slight heart attack. He spent 12 days in the ICU and on two occasions, they thought he might not last 24 hours. He still fighting and has shown some improvement. They had to insert a feeding to into his stomach because he still cannot swallow properly to eat or drink. He is still in the hospital today (6/7/15) but will be transferred to a Skilled Nursing Facility soon, for short-term and most likely some long-term care. As you can imagine, the bills are growing every hour. We thought that the bills would be covered since he has MediCare and a secondary insurance (AARP) that he has paid on for years. On Friday I was informed that his secondary insurance plan does not cover any of his medical care listed above. Already, a rough estimate, he will owe over $25,000 in the next few months.
If you can help out, we cannot say thank you enough. If not, we understand, but please share this with everybody you can, you would be shocked how many lives that my Dad has touched. Say a prayer for him please.
God Bless
