June 18th update: Rita continues to heal from surgery but has become a full time patient advocate for our Bob❤️ Thank you Rita for being present. But this roll is physically & mentally challenging so is limiting calls and posts.
Bob is having some good moments but struggling with an underlying infection & daily dialysis. He is working hard in PT and we pray he can press the call button or feed himself shortly.
Thank you all for your love and prayers
June 9th Rita got her stitches out and if healing continues at this pace, she will begin radiation end of June beginning of July for 25 sessions over 5 weeks.
Now for Bob! He is receiving the last 10 minutes of dialysis now and then we are moving out of the ICU and heading to telemetry care. He only has the line in his neck for dialysis, but other than that, he’s wire free. He can swallow crushed up medicines in applesauce. (After this, I don’t know how much applesauce he’s going to be eating as the memories of crushed up pills in it may have ruined it for him.) He’s on the liquid, gel like menu and it all tastes like mush and he’s not a fan. But here’s the thing. He’s complaining about the food. He’s able to talk even though there are some difficulties he will have to overcome. We are looking into acute care facilities now for when he is released. He’s got some tough days of therapy ahead but this man that I love continues to BLOW AWAY ALL EXPECTATIONS!!! He’s the miracle man. I know the entire staff and even though he’s may not be on their rounds for a day, they check in to see his progress and leave happy and just elated. And Bob would like to say, “Thank you all for the love. I feel it everyday. I’m humbled. I’m so very grateful!” His words, not mine! Namaste!!!❤️
Bob Update June 7th: Bob is awake and off the ventilator!!!He is getting a 3 1/2 hour dialysis to try to remove a little more fluid. He saw the speech therapist and got the ok to drink a thicker water and take his Tylenol in apple sauce cuz he can swallow. He will be needing to go to a rehabilitation facility once we get past all this. He had his first physical therapy today too. He was able to move some things and not others. He's pretty weak in some areas. But after 9 days of not moving at all, they were impressed with what he could do. The staff are starting to see his personality in his winks and smirks. The infectious disease Dr said he's past the scare of pneumonia and she called him the miracle man. The staff are stunned that he is where he is with what he just went through. Not only did he survive but he keeps shocking people with his progress. Rita is by his side during all of this and doesn’t leave until they kick her out and tell me to go get her own sleep. She is forever grateful for all the love and support.
As most of you know, my uncle, Bob Liegl, was rushed to the hospital on May 28th. He ended up having emergency aortic heart valve surgery (Type A Aortic Dissection). He had two tears in two different locations of the aorta. He is still sedated but he did make it through the surgery.
Two weeks earlier, my aunt, Rita Liegl, had surgery to remove breast cancer. Radiation will be started beginning of July. Rita is also so strong and has been at my uncle's side, playing his favorite music and sharing our prayers with him. Their son Ben has also been by their side, and luckily he lives close to them in Arizona.
These are the last people to ever ask for assistance, but I am reaching out so they can both focus on healing. Bob and Rita both have hearts of literal gold and are always the first to lend an ear and provide guidance to anyone in need. Many people have been wanting to know what they can do to help since we cannot be together during this difficult time. Please continue your prayers and play Bob's favorite bands (U2, Tragically Hip, and Great Big Sea). This will be a long road to recovery ahead, but your assistance is greatly appreciated!
