My name is Tim Fleming. I am a Local 3 electrician and a member of the Local 3 Motorcycle Club. I am currently employed by E.J. Electric. I became engaged on March 19th, 2017. My fiancé, Wendy, is a registered nurse and the mother of my future step son, Weston. (Please view the "Updates" section of this campaign to see more photos)
Weston sustained a severe anoxic brain injury at the age of 13 when he was playing outside at his father’s neighbor’s house after school. The accident was caused by an accidental strangulation and left him bed and wheelchair bound. He has never regained the ability to walk or talk or eat by mouth. The morning of his accident was the last time his mother heard his voice as he kissed her good-bye to leave for his school bus while saying "I love you mommy." (The picture above is of Weston at home in his hospital bed).
Weston has many medical needs that are not covered by insurance. I am trying to raise money to help buy him items to make his life better.
One item he needs is a stander that will help his bones. His bones are weakening from not being able to stand by himself and this past year he sustained 2 spontaneous leg fractures. The stander costs about $4000. Another item needed is a tilt-in-space shower chair. This enables Weston to have a real shower instead of a sponge bath in his bed. His last real shower was before his accident. The shower chair costs about $3000. Weston has a bathroom that his nurses use. The tub would need to be converted into a walk in shower to accommodate the shower chair. This cost still has to be researched.
Maintenance of his medical equipment is also not covered. His bed alone requires yearly service in excess of $2000 just for the air cushions and turning parts. The bed prevents bed sores and pneumonia. Soon his bed will need to be replaced because it is over 25 years old and most parts are not longer available. It was a donation and costs over $60,000 to replace new. Insurance does not cover a bed for preventative care. Weston would have to have a bed sore before insurance would “consider” paying for repairs or a new one.
Weston has nursing care, but it is not 24 hours a day. Whenever a nurse is needed to care for Weston when his mother works late the nurse is paid by Wendy “out of pocket”.
His mother’s dream would be to be able to afford stem cell treatment and hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT). These treatments help with brain injury repair and have been known to help regain speech so Wendy can hear Weston's voice again. Their costs are approximately $30000 per stem cell treatment and $200 per HBOT session. HBOT comes in a 40 session package minimum ($8000). There is the added “out of pocket” cost of transportation to and from treatments that Medicaid does not cover. Insurance only provides ambulette transportation to Insurance approved appointments. Since stem cell and HBOT treatments are not approve by Weston's private insurance or Medicaid, transportation to these treatments is too expensive until his family can afford a handicap van; or have one donated.
Any help would be so gratefully appreciated and would help Weston to have what he has had to do without due to cost and insurance denials.
Thank you for reading and helping to support Weston
God bless.
