Our grandson, Weston Hartnedy, was born June 5th at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock, AR. Immediately after birth he went into respiratory distress and was taken to the NICU. He was then intubated and treated for what they thought was pulmonary hypertension but none of the normal treatments were working. The decision was made to examine his heart and do an echocardiogram. We then learned Weston had a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD), transposition of the great arteries, a Ventricle Septal Defect, and an Atrial Septal Defect. The care he needed, required him to be transferred to Children Hospital’s Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) immediately. Once they arrived at Children’s, we learned that Weston would need open heart surgery to repair his CHD. While waiting for his heart surgery, Weston’s hospital stay was complicated by a condition called Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). This condition required him to have an emergency bedside surgery where surgeons removed a large portion of his colon and required him to have a temporary ileostomy and mucus fistula. This unexpected condition caused Weston to have to wait a minimum of 6 weeks until he would be eligible for his heart surgery in order to allow his body to heal and complete antibiotics before going through another major surgery. Weston finally had his open heart surgery on August 3rd, two days before he turned 2 months old. Now he is in recovery and working hard so he can go home where he belongs. We are hoping that Weston will get to go home within the next month. Unfortunately, Weston will need to return for another major surgery to reconnect his bowels in the next couple months. All of this was totally unexpected for our family and it has really taken a toll on all of us especially Andrew and Lindsey. They have been commuting from Conway to Little Rock daily if not staying the night at the hospital. I am constantly amazed at their strength. It is beautiful to watch them as they talk to Weston. There is already a wonderful bond within the new Hartnedy family! It regularly brings me to tears when I see them together, but now the bills are starting to pile up and it is very overwhelming on top of everything else. I am reaching out to anyone that can make any donation to help them. I know they would greatly appreciate anything you can offer to help relieve them of this financial burden as they try to care for our sweet Weston. Our entire family thanks you for all the prayers you have offered and continue to offer until Weston can finally go home with his mommy and daddy.
