WESTMAN FAMILIES OF ADDICTS is a not for profit support group based in Brandon, MB where our community is currently battling a methampetamine (crystal meth) crisis of epic proportions. We began in June 2017 as a group of Warrior Moms sharing resources, education & advocacy to support ourselves and loved ones battling drug abuse, and struggling to find effective resources.
7 months later, and we became non profit, and support 160 families, by educating, reducing stigma, advocating and just “being there” with understanding and compassion. The goal is to foster wellness, not only among our families battling the drug crisis, and losing loved ones, but also the community at large. Our first public forum in January was attended by 160 community members!
The immediate need to reach our goal is to fund for a Recovery Coaching Program that will make the necessary connections with our substance abusers, and provide support in recovery in whatever form works for them. The Recovery Coaches also alleviate many resources, and provide support to the front line staff of both the police and emergency room staff. Recovery Coaching is a form of strengths-based support for people with active addictions or who are in recovery from alcohol, drugs, codependency, or other addictive behaviours. Recovery Coaches help clients find ways to stop addiction (abstinence), or reduce harm associated with addictive behaviours. Recovery coaches can help a client find resources for harm reduction, detox, treatment, family support and education, local or online support groups; or help a client create a change plan to recover on their own.
In the long term we need help to further grow our support group, and to eventually create a social detox in Brandon, MB that will be accessible to all with no barriers for admittance. The vision is a holistic centre that will use many treatment modalities in order to individualize care.
