We Are a Wildfire Community Group in West Kelowna, United for Safety!

How can you help?

We want to be better informed on a minute-by-minute basis as to the severity of wildfire risk in our community and the back country interface.
With the help of electronic Fire Danger Rating LED Signs, our citizens and visitors can be informed of the latest up to date and critical safety information available on two messaging boards within our city.

The McDougall Creek Wildfire left a lasting mark on our land, our water, and our sense of security as a community. Now, we’re channeling that experience into meaningful action.

Our watershed is vulnerable. Our trails are still recovering.

I mean, honestly — look out your back or front door, we have to protect what’s left.

John Martin, Heather Larratt and Olivia Lawson, with the full support of Chief Brolund, are launching a community-driven project to install Electronic Fire Danger Rating LED Signs in two key locations of West Kelowna chosen by the Fire Service.

Let’s team up with all West Kelowna neighbouhoods to get this fundraising going.

Why It Matters?

We want to be better informed and educated—minute by minute— about wildfire risk levels in our area and along the back-country interface.

Now obviously, these signs aren’t going to stop individuals from riding dirt bikes into the back-country during an “Extreme Warning” level without a spark arrestor, or starting a fire in the bush to roast hot dogs, but that’s not the point.

The long-term goal is public education. We need to shift how we think about our actions. We need to think differently about our forests, our watershed, and our community’s safety.
