For 110 years, the Wesley United Methodist Church building has served both the parish and the Ironwood, MI community. In 2017, one of the original ceiling/roof trusses broke, and detailed engineering inspections revealed that many others were bending. Shoring scaffolding was put in place to secure the roof through the winter, and the replacement of the broken truss and reinforcement of all the remaining trusses was completed in the summer of 2018. The total costs for this repair have come to over $200,000, of which Wesley has paid over $50,000, with the remaining being financed by a local bank loan. Through the skills of the engineers, contractors, supplies, and talented carpenters, our building is secure once more.
However, this debt is a great challenge to our small congregation. We are determined that with the help of God, our neighbors, and our friends everywhere that this challenge to pay off this debt as soon as possible can be met. Whether it be neighbors in location or in spirit, we respectfully ask your assistance.
Wesley’s stone building has served as a focal point for worship, ministry, and service to Ironwood since 1910, and is a downtown Ironwood landmark. Retaining all of its original stained glass windows, original pews, as well as housing a large unaltered 3 manual M.P.Moller pipe organ from 1950, the architecture of Wesley church continues to grow in historic significance. But, beyond architecture, the Wesley congregation ministers to the spiritual and community needs of Ironwood today, just as in the past. Our congregation is smaller now than in 1910 or 1950, but its commitment to providing worship opportunities as well as extensive direct people ministry remains strong. Wesley congregation (and its building) continues to carry out its Christian service mission of helping others.
Picture #1 shows the shoring erected to support the roof after the broken truss was removed. This shoring stayed in place throughout the winter until repair work plans could be designed and weather conditions would allow work to begin in the attic.
Picture #2 shows two of the skilled carpenters working on creating in situ the new roof truss.
