Earlier this month, my best friend Loki Shepherd was diagnosed with leukemia. When she got this news, she was in the early stages of beginning a treatment for an eating disorder that has been a struggle for her for 20 years. Now, she will be balancing both the eating disorder treatment and the leukemia situation, which will at the very least begin with chemotherapy.
This would all have been terrible news a year ago, but in light of the current political situation, it is terrifying. This is difficult enough to go through in any political climate, but the repeated threats to repeal healthcare from those of us, like Loki, who are not wealthy… this is too much to endure while trying to beat both cancer and an eating disorder. She cannot get healthy while under the constant strain of worry that at any moment, a cabal of heartless and wealthy men might decide that her life is of less value than their bank accounts, and take away her healthcare. She needs to find somewhere else to recuperate.
And Loki and I... well, she's my best friend. The other half of my heartbeat, as Dizzy Gillespie once called Charlie Parker. And she has said that she can't and won't do this without me there with her. Wherever Loki goes, I will be following to take care of her. For myriad reasons, she and I have settled on Ireland as the place for her healing.
Loki has already explored options there and reached out to some treatment and oncology centers in Ireland. We have also been able to secure the backing of a sponsor for our long-term work permits to allow us to stay in the country...provided, that is, that we can pay to cover the costs of the applications and all our other moving and settlement expenses. That’s where you come in.
Loki and I are saving as much as we can for the trip, but with her ongoing medical expenses and my more-or-less paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle, we are asking today for your support. The inspiration and atmosphere of Ireland, combined with its much-needed safety net, are important to Loki's physical and mental well-being as she regains her health, and it is likewise important to her that I be there with her to help her through this time in her life. They say friends are family you pick for yourself, and if that is the case, Loki is indeed family to me. Please help Loki, and help me to take care of her.
