Griebel Family Flood Recovery
Donation protected
This Go Fund Me campaign is for my sister, Melody Griebel, and her daughter, Josie.
At 2am on Thursday, June 4th, 2015, a police officer knocked on Melody & Josie's door, saying a 6' wall of water had already hit the town of Manville, Wyoming without warning, and was headed straight for their house and the town of Lusk. They had 30 minutes to evacuate.
They quickly packed their bags and loaded their dog into the vehicle. They had three cats and a litter of kittens, but could only find one adult cat before they had to evacuate.
They took shelter with others at a local church on higher ground. Thirty minutes later, the pastor told them the water was coming up higher than expected, and they would have to evacuate again.
They spent the rest of the night in their vehicle on a hill in town, with flood waters rushing below them.
The town of Lusk was without electricity or running water. All roads in and out of town were closed, as the flood washed out several bridges. The overpass in Lusk collapsed. A house just down the street, where one of Josie's classmates lived with his family, was swept off it's foundation and settled in the city park, blocks away.
In all, 29 houses in Lusk and Manville were destroyed in the flood. The city sewer system is damaged and not working properly, so families are still without plumbing and fresh running water. Homes and businesses were destroyed.
Fortunately, no one was killed.
On Friday morning, Melody & Josie were finally able to return to their home. One adult cat was waiting there for them, and the other wandered back home that day. A policeman had saved one of the kittens. The other kitties were gone.
Flood water had filled their entire basement and had been 4" deep on the main floor of their house. Josie's room was in the basement.
The basement ceiling had caved in. Josie's room and nearly all the contents were destroyed. Clothes gone. Stuffed animals ruined. Her drawings, pictures and school projects were destroyed. Josie lost nearly all of her clothes, shoes and jackets. She lost all but two of her stuffed animals. She is an avid reader, and her extensive book collection was lost. This little girl saves everything. Now it's all gone...
Melody lost a lot of clothes that were in a downstairs closet. Both Melody & Josie lost all their winter clothes, coats, boots, etc.
Melody still has her job in Lusk, but she and Josie have no home. The house they were renting is uninhabitable.
Lusk had very little housing available before the flood, and with all the homeless families, there is no housing available now.
Melody & Josie need your help to begin rebuilding their lives. Please lend a hand to help them get immediate basic needs. They've got a long road ahead to find and furnish a home. Every little bit helps.
Thank you, and God Bless!
