Gina's surgery fund
Donation protected
Hello friends,
I am writing in regard to our dear friend, Gina, who is in need of our support at this time. Gina is receiving her fourth surgery for treatment of uterine fibroids and endometriosis in late June. After trialling multiple treatments over the years, Gina will undergo Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) surgery. Although we have high hopes for the surgery, Gina will need support as she undergoes this treatment. As her last option for preserving her fertility, this surgery is extremely important for Gina's health and wellbeing.
The severity of Gina’s chronic condition has been considerably rare and debilitating. From a single surgery, the doctors removed a total of seven pounds of fibroids from Gina's uterus. Undergoing three surgeries and living with ongoing discomfort and pain has taken a toll, but the impacts of Gina's condition have reached far beyond the physical symptoms.
Throughout her adult life, much of Gina's energy and attention has been focused on the emotional, physical, and systemic challenges that chronic health issues present. Gina has been tasked with organising post-surgery support, navigating health and social services, dealing with ongoing financial strain, and making difficult decisions relating to her health and fertility. On top of these stressors, the physical and financial barriers she experiences have prevented Gina from engaging with activities that are meaningful to her, such as dance and participation in community/social events. Without the support of family from a young age, Gina has often had to navigate these challenges with minimal help.
Gina works as an independent contractor which unfortunately disqualifies her from receiving disability payment while she recovers. Her current work is extremely physically demanding, which means she will need to be properly recovered before returning to work. The physical nature of Gina's job, which limits the amount she can work, as well as the cost of living in New York City, have made it difficult for Gina to save sufficient funds.
In order to minimize costs and receive practical support, Gina will be staying with a friend in Mexico following her surgery. The money raised through this fund will go towards supporting Gina with rent, food, transportation, and mental health resources, and any medical issues that come up while Gina recovers.
Although Gina is extremely resilient and resourceful, the stressors outlined above have significantly impacted Gina's mental health and wellbeing. Despite the challenges Gina continues to face, she has always been a kind and generous friend, who is constantly trying to better herself and show up for the people in her life. Financial support from her community will help Gina recover and stay well, so that she focus on the things in life that bring her joy.
