My name is Wendy Kimmell Hewitt. I am 40 years old and the mother of 2 young children, ages 8 & 11. I was diagnosed with breast cancer one week after my 40th birthday in March 2017. While my cancer was caught early through a routine mammogram, it is aggressive in that I went from no cancer 16 months ago, to having 4 tumors. The recommended treatment is double mastectomy, to be followed with chemotherapy and radiation. My husband is a self-employed electrician and I work PT on the NICU at the University of Virginia Medical Center primarily for health insurance coverage for my family and me. My daughter, Morgan, has Crohn's Disease which requires Humira injections bi-weekly and regular hospital visits. My surgery on April 20 went well and am now focused on recovery from my double mastectomy over the course of the next 6 weeks before my chemo/radiation treatment begins. The medical bills have already started rolling in from the diagnostic phase of my cancer and now my surgery. The funds collected here will go directly to help pay for my out-of-pocket expenses to meet our health insurance deductible of $6k per calendar year and help keep my household functioning with the loss of my income after my paid time off runs out. Thank you very much for reading my story and any monetary support you give!
