Prominent Memphis Organizer Amber Sherman was unlawfully arrested on her morning run on April 9th for filming the police in a suspected ICE raid. She was detained for more than 17 hours and released on her own recognizance. We expect her case will be dismissed.
Since then, she has faced an overwhelming amount of harassment online, lost her position on the City’s Police Reform Task Force, and has faced intimidation by police.
Amber has given much of her time and energy for several years to hold police accountable, fight for more transparency and access to participation in local governance, support a more transparent superintendent search for MSCS, and a whole lot more we can’t fit here.
These efforts aren’t without their challenges, as she has repeatedly been the scapegoat online for our public leaders’ failings and their fear of her challenging the status quo.
As friends of Amber’s, we want to support her in taking care of herself, healing from the compounding traumas, and continuing to do the work she’s so good at on behalf of our community.
More than anything, we want to show some love to Amber–and return a fraction of the care she has offered us.
Your support will help her to prioritize her mental, physical, and emotional well-being after a frightening interaction with the police/stint in jail.
Any support you can offer will be greatly appreciated ❤️
