Hi, My name is J Patrick Harkey, class of '84 graduate, and a Navy Rugby Player, P-3 Driver, went civilian in 1993, did a lot of interesting roles, but got a spinal cord injury in 2019. Over 21 procedures, including a titanium implant at C 5\6. Most recently, a three level Rhizotomy on the right side on Feb 5 of my neck, and the left side scheduled for the 19th.

During my last trip to the local emergency room, my wife of 15 years took off without a word or note, ensuring all her direct deposits were stopped and none of the bills were paid. To make matters a little more challenging, my landlord of 9 years informed me they were selling the house we were renting, and as we were on an extension of the lease, they only were required to give me notice to the end of the month to find a place and move.

Now being bankrupt, and behind on everything, I decided to get a UHaul, and look at returning back to my little hometown in Indiana, a small town of 2500 that my 85 year old Mom lives currently.

It wasn't until talking to a friend, who was talking to other friends, that he convinced me to start a page, as there was interest from folks who couldn't show up in Center Valley to help me move. As my friend said "you have always been stubborn!", I never would have considered doing this without his urging. So my friend, I am listening to your strong suggestion, and putting this out there, as embarrassing and disappointing as it is. I never thought I would be starting over at 61, and before I could always use work and the income to handle any challenge.

Now being on Social Security disability with a low VA rating, the fixed income isn't even enough for me to remain in PA, which I would prefer to do but know it isn't possible at this time. My plan is to load the truck on Saturday, possibly Sunday. Hook up the car on Monday after my surgery, then drive to Indiana and figure out where to store, or where to unload. I am looking at a couple of low income apartments. but have to wait on the application process.

I really thank my friends for twisting my arm to put this out there as I would never have done this otherwise. Thanks for reading, every bit helps, and I'll post updates as I go!

The funds will be used to rent the Uhaul, and get my gear to storage in Indiana. Initial estimate for the Uhaul is 1675 plus tax and gasoline, the I'll get insurance so the truck is fully covered. I am applying at two apartments, both disabled 55+, one in Rockville, (the same town as my mother) and one in Clinton, a few miles away.

FEB 13th Update:

I am humbled and blessed by the support of everyone!  The UHaul is rented, we will load it up on Saturday, anyone is welcome, the plan is Saturday.
