Victor L. Dickerson Jr. is a welding student I’ve had the pleasure of working with for the past 2 years at Badger Technical School. Victor maintained a 3.5 GPA throughout high school, missed only 8 days throughout his entire high school career and had perfect attendance in his senior year. Victor found a passion for welding in his 11 th grade year. Victor comes from an extremely disadvantaged household that doesn’t have any extra money after the normal household expenses. The high school that Victor attends, Arcadia High School, has a large percentage of students that come from disadvantaged backgrounds and the entire county receives free lunch and breakfast due to the overwhelming need of our students. Generational poverty is a reality for many of our students and, for many, education is seen as secondary to just surviving. By getting a full time job in the welding field, Victor is working on breaking the cycle of poverty to make a better life for himself.
Victor now has the opportunity to move from his longtime home on the Eastern Shore of Virginia to Newport News, Virginia, where he has a job opportunity as a entry level welder at Newport News Shipbuilding. Victor is currently going through the pre-employment process and will most likely be starting his employment journey in the summer of 2020.
As Victor’s welding instructor, I can say for certain he is an extremely deserving student as well as a very solid student with a strong work ethic. By setting up this fund, I am hoping to give him a fair chance to get a solid start to life and to take some of the stress out of his move across the bay.
Victor will be using the funds raised to fund his move from the Eastern Shore of Virginia to Newport News, VA, to begin his career. Funds collected will be used towards the following expenses (estimates).
- First month’s rent for an apartment ~ $550-$650
- Security deposit for an apartment ~ $550-$650
- Essential living expenses (shower curtains, plates, silverware, microwave) ~ $400
- First month’s groceries until first paycheck comes through ($75 a week) ~ $225
- Connection fees for electricity ~ $30
- Security deposit for internet service (if funds are available) ~ $50
- Purchase a bicycle for transportation to and from work ~ $100-$200
Please keep in mind that I will be in charge of the funds and will be making sure that the money is spent towards the above expenses only and will be kept in a account solely dedicated to this cause.
