Happy New Year! As we turn the page on 2016 and welcome the new year, we remember that many Syrian families have not been as fortunate.
In recent weeks, a number of Syrian refugee families have arrived to Baltimore County and we can expect more in our area in the coming weeks and months. We are in contact with two nonprofit communiy organizations that serve Syrian refugee families in the DC/MD/VA area.
We have already donated to a number of organizations in support of Syrians in besieged areas of Syria. We are now looking for ways to welcome Syrians who have left everything behind to start a new life in the United States. They didn't leave their loved ones, homes and belongings behind just because they want to. They had to. They want to work, they want their children to feel safe and to study again. We are trying to raise $2,000 so that we can purchase Welcome Boxes for 40 recently resettled families.
Each $50 Welcome Box will go to a Syrian refugee family that has been resettled in the DC/MD/VA area. Your Welcome Boxes will not only ease the financial burden of purchasing these necessities for themselves (which are not covered by food stamps), but send a message these people desperately need to hear: You are welcome here. We wish you well!
What will each Welcome Box include?
Laundry detergent
Shampoo and conditioner
Body soap and/or body wash
Toothpaste
Toothbrushes
Feminine hygeine products
Other personal essentials
About the organizers:
Samia and Ramon are parents who live in Washington, DC. Their young son Laith turns 3 at the end of January. He has everything he needs and in lieu of gifts, we are asking our family and friends to donate to support newly arrived Syrian refugee families in our area. We feel a profound sense of responsibility when it comes to helping these families feel welcome. Samia comes from a Syrian family and fondly remembers visits with family in Damascus, and Syrian warmth and hospitality. Ramon had the opportunity last spring to volunteer with Syrian refugee families in Greece and Turkey.
