The Association for New Canadians' Welcome Rainbow Project aims to build capacity to support Government Assisted Refugees who identify as LGBTQIA+. The project started during the pandemic when the ANC started to learn how Covid-19 restrictions were being used to target LGBTQIA+ individuals in refugee camps, and how few camps even accepted LGBTQIA+ refugees. The initiative will support the sponsorship of 5 LGBTQIA+ refugees. The ANC will donate $25,000 but this is not enough. We hope to raise funds to bring at least 5 refugees to St. John’s. All funds raised will be held in trust and go the living expenses of those we bring. The ANC will also offer programming and supports to these individuals to ensure they can go to language school, receive employment supports, and get connected to their new community.
