The devastating storms that went through West Virginia the week of June 20th had a heavy impact on many people. Members of St Mary's of the Assumption in Glenshaw, PA and Sts. Simon and Jude in Greentree, PA witnessed the effects of these stroms firsthand during their annual mission trip to Webster Springs, WV. We watched the flood waters rise to cover the community park, homes, and businesses. We moved out of one of the churches where we were staying so that victims of the flood had emergency shelter. Our local coordinater, Jimmy Utt, was hit especially hard when a transformer fell through the roof of his home.
We have a personal relationship with many of the people of this town, as this is our fifth year returning there for our mission trip. Our goal is to collect as much as possible to assist in the rebuilding efforts of homes of families who have lost most of their worldly possessions. Many homes that were flooded now need new flooring, carpeting, and drywall. Phase one of our efforts will be to help supply these critical items. Phase two will be to supply gently used furniture and small appliances to those most in need.
All funds donated will go through the First United Methodist Church of Webster Springs' designated flood relief account. Pastor Brandon Moll and team know the needs of the community, many of whom our team has a personal relationship through past mission trips. The residents of Webster County are resilient and have overcome similar disasters over the past few years. Please keep them in your prayers and ask God to wrap them in the mantle of His love.
In the coming weeks we will update you with news on the individual families who are benefiting from your donation.
