It is with great sadness and devastation that I am here writing this today.
On Sunday February 21st my mother Bonnie was enjoying a nice evening and meal with a dear friend when they decided to enjoy a movie and fire in the basement. Little did she know this was the last time she would enjoy her home of 33 years.
After the movie was over the fire was extinguished and she went to bed. Around 12:30am early Monday morning she was awoken to the sound of fire alarms and the heavy smell of smoke. Leaving her bedroom, a large red glow was visible from the top of the stairs, filling the hearth in the upstairs living room fireplace. The walls were already in flames reaching into the attic. It breaks my heart to imagine what it feels like to witness your home burning to the ground and knowing there is nothing you can do but leave.
Mahtomedi, Stillwater, and White Bear Lake fire department showed up and diligently put out the fire. During the rescue fireman were able to locate Hugo, one of my mother’s cats who suffered a gash and wounded leg. However, we are still in search of Hazel (knowing she is a scaredy cat we are still praying for the best; that she is hiding somewhere and isn't harmed). The fire did not spread to the yard and the 24 chickens are doing well in their coop. Bonnie’s two beloved fish tanks with fish she has had for many years did not make it.
The damage to the house is extensive and the roof is completely gone.
After nearly a week of investigation, experts, fireman, and insurance guys we are still navigating what exactly caused the fire and what the future holds.
Today I did a walk through with the structural engineer and the structure is far more damaged then we first thought. We are looking at a complete demolition.
I can't explain the feeling of this loss. If you know my mother you know her love of art, cooking, her pets, and home décor. My heart breaks to have these things taken from us and destroyed.
I did not know this last holiday would be the last time my family sat and ate together in the only home I knew, the home my parents built, and the memories those walls held.
I am creating this page asking for your prayers, love and support. In the midst of a pandemic, losing a home is the last thing I can even imagine. Please consider donating if you can as we try to navigate this very difficult time in our lives. Funds will help with immediate needs, clean up, housing, food, gas, supplies and restoration. Your support will allow the time and healing and hopefully a space to call home until we know what the future will look like. I plan to update as we are still processing and coping with the many thoughts and emotions that come with this difficult situation.
With Love and Thanks,
