My name is Josh Webb, I am an active-duty USN Sailor, and since December 2020 my family and I have been enduring financial hardship due to my wife Tonia’s Health.

In December 2020 contracted Covid-19 on and was in the ICU with bilateral pneumonia (AKA double pneumonia). She also got sepsis at the hospital and was there for a week before being well enough to return home. During this time I was making daily runs back and forth between the hospital and our home 10 miles away to take care of our 18-year-old who also had covid and was home from school.

In 2022 I was stationed in Virginia when we found out that Tonia developed Avascular necrosis (AVN) in both her hips/ shoulder/ and knees from the heavy steroids she had received in the ICU to save her life from pneumonia. During that time I was flying back and forth from Virginia to Texas for her appointments and eventually operations on her left and right hips and right shoulder to remove the AVN.

Later in 2022 during her yearly breast exam, we found out that she was at an exceptionally high risk of getting breast cancer due to family history and gene testing. We decided to take preemptive measures to avoid breast cancer and in February of 2023, Tonia had a double mastectomy. During this period, I was driving 90 miles back and forth daily to take care of our 19-year-old high schooler and ensure that Tonia was getting the care and support she needed. Two weeks after she was discharged from this operation she developed a severe infection and again ended up in the hospital until the infection was healed.

During these medical events, our insurance did pay for the operations and hospital stay and my chain of command worked with me to ensure I could get time to take care of my family. But all the travel, gas, meals, hotels, and unexpected related expenses have financially burdened my single-income household over the last two years.
