My self and 6 others attended a property where rocky now named Salem (meaning Peace and safety) the dog had been left for two/three weeks without food or water.
Male owner admitting he's away for unforseeable future and the female admitted to moving out 3 weeks prior.
We spoke with the female owner more who had turned up the day before we arrived, to collect her things, she saw rocky and what state he was in.
Lefr a load of dry food and bucket of water.
With no letterbox to look through we could only see him at the top window, from outside four stories below, and on the balcony with a small barrier and how skinny and distressed he was.
I called the police and they said the case is with rspca but they didnt open until 11am and the out of hours options were looping or malfunctioning, dog warden wouldn't help or police or fire brigade.
Myself and another man managed to get the keys from said woman and permission to enter the property.
She refused to come along again to help (as rocky knew her and would be easier to get him to a vet but also needed her in person to give permission for veterinary treatment ).
Myself and man present entered the building at midnight on 21st April 2026. We were greeted by a very vocal scared skinny dog who bolted for the balcony. As soon as We entered there wasn't one bit of floor not covered in fecal matter and urine. It became apparent Salem wasnt keen on men or anyone really at this point.
All the house lights were on the whole two weeks as was the TV.
My buddy left around half 1am and I remained in the property trying to gain some trust and give company. I turned off the lights and he settled. I had a wonder into a locked room and found a dead rabbit in its tunnel in its hutch in an extremely hot small room with no water. I found a hamster carrier but with bedding but no hamsters, just bags of dirty sawdust in the room
This was sickening. The heat from a little plastic overheating fridge had turned the room into a slow oven.
This matter just got even more extreme and serious. She hadnt told me about the bunny. She had told the neighbour she took a bunny and two hamsters.
I have named the bunny Justice.
Justices fur looked like he had only just died but as I approached I noticed his body was sunken and skin was shrivelled, his eyes were sunken and maggot larvae was present around the eye and ear sockets. I covered him with some straw to keep them smell in. Salem could smell this poor dead pet rabbit ten times more.
I left at 4:30am to charge my phone and returned at 6 with my brother Ben.
I was greeted by the voluntary team Rhia, Hannah, Jayde including two experienced dog handlers, Tom and Kris. After a long time of quiet trust building, doing normal home stuff like "washing up" and chatting and he settled on the sofa. Tom and Kris managed to crate him as reluctant as he was and extremely scared and defensive. We drove to a few rescue centers including pdsa (I was told by out of hours they would help as rspca didnt open until 11am. They turned us away because the owner wouldn't give permission for treatment and to relinquish the dog to people that care. We headed for RSPCA at midday 21st april 2026 where we found the police had not passed the case on.
I did a report and showed the images of the dead rabbit to staff and inspector.
The RSPCA inspector agreed to attend the property to collect the rabbit and freeze the body in order to investigate; but to prosecute the owners we need to prove when and how the rabbit died. An autopsy would reveal this. Unfortunately it costs £1000 and it isn’t something RSPCA are willing to pay for.
This woman and man will get away this if we don't have that vital piece of evidence to potentially stop them owning animals in future.
Salem was thankfully deemed fit enough to go to the handlers home where he is starting rehabilitation for a wonderful life, and to trust in men.
But this poor rabbit didnt have that chance.
Please can you help get justice for this little life that was so cruelly neglected and uncared for, anything will help. Thank you
