【Opening Message】

"I want to create an environment where actors and staff can create without anxiety."

That’s the reason I started this crowdfunding campaign.

In the world of theatre, it’s often considered “normal” for performers to cover their own transportation,

give up paid work, and invest personal time and money just to appear on stage.

I’ve been in that situation myself.

But now that I’ve stepped into the role of producer, I feel a responsibility to challenge and change that “normal.”

This project, STAND, was something I felt I had to take on.

After being approached by a friend who passionately believed in the work, I read through the script and realized that the values I’ve held dear, particularly the idea of “sharing stories”, were deeply embedded in this piece.

Ticket sales alone are not enough to cover even basic expenses.

I want to provide the actors and staff who are supporting this project with at least a modest payment, so they can fully focus on the creative process.

This crowdfunding campaign is the first step in building that foundation.

【Why We Need Funding】

The upcoming stage production STAND will be performed at the 2025 Vancouver Fringe Festival, with a total of six shows planned.

Because of its immersive format, the audience is limited to 40–50 people per performance.

Tickets are priced at up to $18, but after platform fees, the actual income per ticket is about $15.

Even if all performances sell out, the total estimated ticket revenue would be around $3,600–$4,500.

Meanwhile, the minimum production costs are as follows:

This adds up to about $2,700, which only covers the absolute minimum required to make the production happen.

Technical staff are provided by the Fringe organizers, which helps reduce costs.

However, even with that support, it is difficult to cover rehearsal stipends and performance fees for the actors and team members through ticket sales alone.

That’s why we’ve launched this crowdfunding campaign — to secure funding beyond ticket sales.

Our first goal is $1,500, with a stretch goal of $3,000.

This amount would allow us to provide at least modest compensation and rehearsal stipends to the actors and staff.

While the entertainment world may seem glamorous on the surface,

the truth is that many behind-the-scenes financial struggles remain.

【What is STAND?】

STAND is a production with a somewhat unusual background, originally conceived as part of a regional revitalization effort in a small city in Japan. It was planned with the aim of contributing to the formation of a local community, and was created through workshops involving individuals with no prior acting experience.

As a result, it is characterized by its immersive structure, in which the audience is not merely "watching" the play, but is drawn into the world of STAND and participates as one of the performers, offering a unique theatrical experience unlike traditional plays.

This production of the play in Vancouver holds a special significance.

It represents a new challenge: to see how this small experiment, born in a regional city in Japan, will take shape in a foreign land with different languages and cultures, performed by a cast and audience from the local community.

Through this process, we aim to highlight the universality of "acting," something inherent in all human beings. Examples include the way we behave as a parent with our own children, or the way we act differently with customers and friends. We hope to remind everyone of this innate aspect of being human.

For me, this play is my first experience as a producer, and a major challenge in my life, especially since I have only been in Vancouver for a short time.

It is also an opportunity to test the extent to which a Japanese production can resonate in Canada, with its distinct cultural context.

Having worked as an actor for many years, I have felt a strong sense of incongruity with the economic realities of the theatre industry. This was another significant reason for my decision to take on the role of producer for this production.

In Vancouver, a city with a thriving film industry, I firmly believe in the unique and powerful impact of live theatre, where the audience can directly experience the energy of the actors and the changing atmosphere in the space, sometimes even making eye contact with them.

That is why, through "STAND," I want to create an environment where actors and crew can focus on delivering their best performance without financial worries.

Here in Vancouver, I hope to explore new possibilities for theatre through "STAND".

【About Me and This Challenge】

Thank you very much for reading this far.

Allow me to reintroduce myself. I am Yutaro Narihara, the producer of "STAND."

I'd like to take a moment to share a bit about my background.

My career as an actor began when I was 18 years old.

At that time, I wasn't affiliated with an acting agency.

Instead, I was lured in with enticing promises like, "You'll get cast in TV shows and movies right away!" and "You'll become famous!".

However, in reality, they charged exorbitant lesson fees, and the work mostly consisted of being an extra, with very few opportunities.

The reality of these "training schools" was that they preyed on the vulnerable and inexperienced, and I was one of them.

Back then, I didn't question whether this was normal or not. It was only later, after graduating university at the age of 22, that I went to study abroad in New Zealand.

While heading to school one day, I happened to encounter a film crew. I mustered up my broken English and asked if there was any way I could work on set. Thankfully, I was given the opportunity to work as a background actor for half a year.

It was there that I witnessed a stark contrast in the working conditions compared to Japan.

I learned that the long hours and low wages that were considered normal in Japan were anything but.

At the time, I strongly felt the desire to somehow bring the experiences I gained here back to Japan and make a difference.

After returning to Japan, I continued working as an actor for about six more years.

Occasionally, when I was in a stage production, I would also have to sell tickets myself. Some productions even imposed a ticket quota, where you wouldn't get paid unless you sold a certain number of tickets.

Actors are supposed to be performers, but somehow, this kind of environment has become the norm.

It's obvious that the production is responsible for planning and initiating the show, and it shouldn't be the actor's job to clean up their mess.

As I take on the role of a producer for this stage production, I am determined not to repeat those experiences. This is also one of the major reasons why I decided to pursue Crowd Funding.

From there, I changed countries and embarked on the challenge of producing a stage play here in Vancouver, Canada.

Although my work has primarily been in the film industry, there's a very important reason why I've chosen to produce a stage play this time.

That reason is "human connection".

In the year that I've been in Vancouver, I have been helped by "connection" countless times.

And I believe that the thriving film industry in Vancouver symbolizes that.

Especially in Vancouver, where there are fewer entertainment options compared to Japan, the time spent "experiencing" things and "connecting with people" feels incredibly valuable.

In this city with a booming film industry, people aren't just thinking about "becoming famous" or "creating a hit film". They also find joy in planning, shooting, editing, and then watching the film together. During those times, they reminisce about the past, saying things like, "Remember that time?" or "That was tough, wasn't it?"

Perhaps that's one of the greatest joys of filmmaking.

STAND is a production that symbolizes human connection.

The story itself has many scenes where you can experience "connection," but the ultimate representation of "connection" is undoubtedly the final scene where the actors and the audience become one and advance the story together.

The moment when the people who have supported me gather in the same space for just 60 minutes and feel that "connection" together...

I want to experience that firsthand. So, on opening night, I'll be sitting in the audience with everyone!

I've gotten carried away and talked for a while. Let me summarize.

Through this play, "STAND", I believe in the power of human connection. I want to share this feeling with everyone involved in the production and with the audience.

And with the experience gained here, I want to continue creating opportunities for connection in Vancouver, and I want to create an environment where talent and hard work are rewarded accordingly.

This may be a small stage production, but I will put all my energy into making it a stepping stone towards bigger dreams.

「俳優とスタッフが安心して創作できる環境をつくりたい」

それが、このクラウドファンディングを始めた理由です。

演劇の世界では、稽古に参加するだけでも交通費がかかり、生活費を削って舞台に立つことが“当たり前”のようになっています。

僕自身も、かつてその現場に立っていました。

でも今は、プロデューサーとして作品をつくる立場になったからこそ、その“当たり前”を変える責任があると思っています。

この舞台は、僕にとって“やらなければいけない必然”のような出会いでした。

企画を持ちかけてくれた仲間の想いに触れ、台本を読み進めるうちに、これまで僕が大切にしてきた「物語を共有する」という価値観が、この作品の中に組み込まれていることに気づきました。

チケット収入だけでは賄いきれない現実の中で、支えてくれる仲間たちへ最低限の報酬を届け、創作に専念できる環境を整えたい。

このクラウドファンディングは、そのための第一歩です。

【 なぜ資金が必要なのか】

今回の舞台「STAND」は、カナダ・バンクーバーのFringe Festivalに参加し、全6回の公演を予定しています。

体験型の演出のため、観客数は各回40〜50名に制限しています。

チケット価格は上限$18ですが、手数料を差し引くと1枚あたりの実収入は約$15。

すべて満席となった場合でも、手数料を引いたチケット収入の見込みは$3,600〜$4,500程度です。

一方、最低限の制作費として必要な支出は以下の通りです：

合計で約$2,700。これはあくまで舞台を成立させるためだけの最低限の支出です。

技術スタッフはFringe側から提供されるためその分の費用は抑えられていますが、この収支では、稽古や出演に参加してくれる俳優たちへの謝礼や稽古代までをまかなうことは困難です。

そこで、チケット収入以外からの資金を確保するために、クラウドファンディングを立ち上げました。

まずは$1,500をファーストゴール、最終的には $3,000を目標にしています。

この金額が集まれば、最低限の謝礼や稽古代をお渡しすることができます。

一見華やかに見えるエンターテイメントの世界ですが、多くの資金問題を抱えているのが現実です。

【STANDについて】

「STAND」はもともと、日本の地方都市の地域復興の一環として生まれた、少し変わった経緯を持つ作品です。地域コミュニティ形成の一助となることを願って企画され、演劇経験のない一般の方々を巻き込み、ワークショップを通して創り上げられました。

そのため、観客はただ舞台を「観る」だけでなく、いつの間にかSTANDの世界に引き込まれていき、演者の1人として舞台に参加していく、これまでの観る演劇にはない体験を提供するイマーシブ（体験型）な構造になっているのが大きな特徴です。

今回、この作品をバンクーバーで上演することには特別な意味があります。

日本の一地方都市で生まれた小さな試みが、言葉も文化も違う海外の地で、現地のキャストと観客が一体となってどのように立ち上がるのか。

その過程を通して、例えば、自分の子どもと接する時の親としての自分、お客さんに対して接する自分と友達といる時の自分、といった、人間が本来持っている《演じること》の普遍性を浮かび上がらせ、誰もが日常的に「演じる」という行為をしていることに気づきを与えることを目指しています。

そしてこの舞台は、バンクーバーに来てまだ間もない中で人生で初めてプロデュースする作品であり、日本の作品が異なる文化を持つカナダでどこまで通用するのかを試す、僕の人生における最大の挑戦です。

長い間役者として活動してきた中で、舞台業界の経済的な側面に強い違和感を覚えていたことも、今回プロデュースという形で舞台制作に挑む大きな理由の一つです。

映像業界が盛んなバンクーバーで、生身の役者が目の前で、時には観客と目を合わせながら演技をしていく中で、役者のエネルギーや空気が変わる瞬間を肌で感じ、身を持って体験できる舞台というものには心を震わせる特別な力があると信じています。

だからこそ、この「STAND」を通して、俳優やスタッフが経済的な不安を持つことなく、最高のパフォーマンスを発揮できる環境を作りたい。

このバンクーバーの地で、新たな演劇の可能性を「STAND」を通して追求したいと思っています。

【自己紹介と、この挑戦について】

ここまで読み進めてくださり、本当にありがとうございます。

改めまして、「STAND」プロデューサーの成原佑太郎です。

ここで僕の経歴をちょこっとお話しさせてください。

僕は役者でのキャリアは18歳の時にキャリアをスタートしました。

この時にお世話になったのは俳優事務所ではありませんでした。

『すぐにテレビや映画に出演できる』『有名になれる』など、夢を煽るような言葉で入所を促されましたが、実際には高額なレッスン費を請求し、仕事といえばエキストラがほとんどで、なかなかチャンスに恵まれませんでした。

養成所の実態は、情報弱者や未経験の人に甘い蜜を吸わせるようなもので、僕もそのうちの1人でした。

当時の僕はその環境って普通なのか？と疑うことはなかったのですが、その後大学を卒業後の22歳でニュージーランドに留学します。

登校中、たまたま出くわした撮影スタッフに、なんとか現場に行ける方法はないか片言の英語で話しかけたら、ありがたいことにその後半年間に渡りバックグラウンドとして撮影現場に行く機会をいただきました。

そこで目の当たりにしたのは、日本とは大きく異なる労働環境の違いでした。

日本では当たり前だった長時間労働や低賃金が、当たり前ではないことを知りました。

当時の僕は、いつかこここで得た経験を日本にも活かせるように頑張ろう！そう強く思いました。

そこから日本に戻り、更に6年ほど役者として活動してきました。

時に舞台に出る時は、役者の傍自らチケットを手売りすることもありました。中には、チケットノルマという、いくら以上売らないとお金がもらえないというものを課す舞台もあります。

役者は本来演じることが仕事のはずなのに、いつからかその様な環境が普通になっています。

当たり前ですが、この舞台を企画・始動したのは制作側であり、そのケツを拭くのは役者ではありません。

今回プロデュースという形で舞台制作に挑む中で、そのような経験から同じようなことは繰り返してはならないというのも、Crowd Fundingをするに至った一つの大きな理由です。

そこから国を変え、カナダのバンクーバーで舞台制作に挑戦する事になりました。

今まで主には映像業界で働いてきましたが、今回あえて舞台を制作するのには、ある大切な想いがあります。

それは、「人との繋がり」です。

バンクーバーに来て1年が経ちましたが、僕は幾度となく「繋がり」に助けられてきました。

そしてそれを象徴するのが、バンクーバーにおける映画産業の盛り上がりだと考えています。

特に娯楽が日本より少ないバンクーバーでは、「体験する」ことや「人と繋がる」という時間がとても価値のあるものだと感じます。

映画制作が盛んなこの地では、みんなが「有名になりたい！」とか、「ヒット作品を作りたい！」という思いだけではなく、みんなで企画を考え撮影し、編集を経てみんなで完成した作品を見る。

その際には、あんなことあったよねぇ、大変だったねー、と思い出話に花を咲かせる。

あくまでも僕の仮定ですが、それがバンクーバーにおける映画制作の醍醐味の一つなのかもしれません。

STANDは、人との繋がりを象徴する作品です。

物語の中でも、幾つもの繋がりを体感するシーンはありますが、なんといっても舞台の終盤、役者とお客さんが一体となって物語を進めていくシーンは「繋がり」そのものだと考えます。

今までお世話になった方々が、たったの60分、同じ空間に集まりみんなでその繋がりを感じる瞬間。

それを肌で感じたい。本番当日、僕は皆さんと一緒に観客席に座ってこの舞台を体感しますね！

話が長くなりました、纏めます。

この舞台『STAND』を通して僕は、人と人との繋がりが生み出す力を信じ、チームに関わる全ての人、そして観客の皆様とこの感動を分かち合いたい。

そしてここで得た経験を糧に、今後もバンクーバーで新たな繋がりの場を創造していき、それらの才能と努力には相当の対価を得られる環境を作りたいです。

小さな舞台かもしれませんが、ここから大きな夢へとつながるように、全力で取り組んでいきます。
