I am an environmental scientist/physicist in France researching ways to minimize the environmental impact of artificial intelligence. The goal is, through consulting AI and data center providers and research, to make sure that all supply chain and data center practices are as environmentally-friendly as possible. AI is a revolutionary technology of our lifetime, and as exciting as it is, we need to remember that we are also facing the biggest crisis to humanity yet: the climate crisis. My first project is to look into the volatility of data centers. In Europe, colocation data centers reportedly have a 94% renewable energy supply rate, but that doesn't account for the carbon footprint caused by climate-related events like a heat wave or a drought, during which water supply, necessary to cool down nuclear power plants and datacenters, are cut short. In my project called the V-Score, I want to investigate climate related volatility of data centers and give them a rating based on the sustainability of their practices.
