In 2022, with your support, we:
- delivered 30,000 postcards to residents along the potential transportation routes, from Dinworic just west of the NWMO’s “candidate site”, along Highways 11 and 17, moving as far east as Wawa on the Highway 17 route and Temagami on Highway 11
- developed and delivered a webinar on transportation risks
- held multiple local events throughout the region during the summer and early fall, including in Ignace and area
- supported awareness-raising walks from Ignace to Sioux Lookout and in Dryden and Thunder Bay
- continued with our dynamic web site (WetheNuclearFreeNorth.ca) with expanded information resources, an even stronger presence on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram, and a monthly electronic newsletter.

The day after Nishnawbe Aski Nation made headlines this past August by expressing their strong resolve to oppose the transportation and burial of nuclear waste, the NWMO announced that they are delaying their decision to select a site (they are looking at two: one between Ignace and Dryden and one in South Bruce, in southwestern Ontario) until 2024.
We have more time; we will do more work!
We can do a lot with a little money because we are a group of dedicated volunteers, but we need your help to cover the material costs of our work over the coming year, including:
- we have secured a strategic location for a billboard, and have a great design ready to go. Our material costs are $2,500 (sign printing and lumber) with donated design services and volunteers putting the sign in place
- we are planning a series of community-specific postcards, with tailored information and local event announcements; postcard printing and delivery costs average $400 per $1000 and our goal is to deliver another 30,000 in 2023
- with COVID restrictions easing, we have plans to launch a new speakers' series, bringing experts into our region who can clearly spell out the risks of transporting, transferring and burying nuclear waste, and can respond to the many questions area residents have
