We need your help with the cost of the surgery

Hi,

My name is Gosia and I’m a mum to 4 fluffy rescues – Gypsy, Pancake, Storm and Cloud. I always loved animals, but only when I started adopting cats did I discover how deep the bond between 2 different species can run. People say “you saved them and gave them a loving home” but I feel it was quite the opposite. They saved me and I found a home in them. They gave me hope and purpose when I saw none. I know their lifespan is shorter than mine, and there will be a time I will have to say goodbye but it’s not that time yet. At least I hope so.

Last year Gypsy started having dental problems, and those are not covered by the insurance. My biggest fear was that he wouldn’t wake up after the surgery due to his heart problems, but he woke up fine and I thought that was our happily ever after. Unfortunately, he had complications, and x-rays showed that he has a hole in his jaw that needs to be reconstructed, and also a biopsy needs to be done to rule out cancer. This will be invasive surgery with a long recovery, I will have to take him to North Berwick for this, as this is the only dental specialist in Scotland. More medical info at the bottom.

The costs of initial assessment with imaging, biopsy and surgical debridement would be approximately £2250. Plus, the cost of treatment and meds after the surgery. I’m doing my best, but I already paid £2000 in vet bills and my savings have perished.

UPDATE:
I just received the estimate from the dental surgery:

I’m one of those people who always wants to do everything by myself and never ask for help, but for Gypsy I would do anything. He is only 9 and I want him to pursue his lifelong ambitions and dreams like:

• Being cute for a living
• Sunbathing all day long (he’s working hard on his tan)
• Lazy Sundays in bed. And Mondays. And Tuesdays. And…
• Opera performances, with favourite topics including: food, sleep, and more food.
• More cuddles (and occasional slaps in the face) with his siblings

You can help Gypsy to do just that and more by donating towards his treatment. And it would help me a little bit too, every £ counts.

Many thanks, from me, Gypsy and the rest of the herd,

With love,
Gosia and Gypsy

Explanation from the veterinary doctor:
What they are advising is to cut the gum line, reflect it back and burr away bone to the socket- flush out the socket- smooth it off and then stitch over the gum again. This is advanced dental surgery and is usually only performed by a specialist.

Diagnosis from a dental specialist:
If the swelling is alveolar bone expansion (caused by initial inflammation) it is not going to reduce. Radiographically bone in the alveolar area looks grossly normal, with evidence of osseous healing deep in the alveolus. Considering how long since extraction this is I am not sure if the alveolus is going to fill in with new bone entirely without surgical intervention and continued entrapment of debris will mean ongoing inflammation/infection, even if the bone is covered with mucosa.

Ideally, the bone and soft tissue should be biopsied, to ensure it is nothing sinister. At the same time you can lift a mucogingival flap, recontour remaining bone, debride and flush the socket from any soft tissue and close the flap to heal by primary intention. The 206 and the retained tooth root of the 207 should ideally also be extracted through the same flap as 204 site revision surgery
