We need your help to help Sam beat Cancer

Hello, my name is Tom King. My wife Sakiko Mizumoto King and I need your kind help for our beautiful son Sam.

On Tuesday 3rd of August Sam went out about 5pm to photo copy a document for his college. 30 minutes later my wife got a call from his phone as he had passed out in the street close to Tanglin Mall. A heaven sent lady - Charlotte - saw him and helped him to make a call using his phone then guided me while I rushed to where they were.

As I arrived an ambulance from Singapore General Hospital had just pulled up and the caregivers took over they were fantastic and brought him around before Sam and I went under emergency lights and sirens into SGH Emergency. He went straight to Intensive Care and I never saw him again until about 10pm and the news was distressing.

They found a huge blood clot in his lungs and one of his testicles was very swollen. So they carried out several emergency procedures and scans and then at midnight I saw him again with the Intensive Care Unit team leader on that shift.

Sam had been hiding his swollen testicle from us, it seems it’s not uncommon for young men to do that but it doesn't help of course. But we understand and there is no fault we just want to fight with Sam to get him back to health.

They discovered the tumour was cancerous and it had spread so all our lives had suddenly changed.

Instead of operating they have decided to go straight to Chemotherapy to control the cancer and then move to next stage. We trust the SGH team they have been so clear and thorough with us and Sam and we are glad to be in their caring professional hands.

Sam spent ten days in the Oncology ward in SGH to start his first session of Chemotherapy. He has now started his second cycle - they are estimating four cycles, before moving to surgery.

It's so very tough and emotional watching your son go through this but his demeanor has always been a kind and generous one and he is being very positive with each challenge. His lovely thick black hair from his Japanese Mum has already fallen and it is tough on him but he is being extremely positive and accepting and we are working as a tight team 24/7. My wife Sakiko has risen above and beyond and is tireless in her work supporting Sam.

It is a tough journey though.

The team and nurses in SGH and the National Cancer Centre in Singapore and in the Intensive Care Unit are unbelievably wonderful people we are so indebted to them for their care and support and love and will never be able to thank them enough.

But now we desperately need help.

As we are not Singapore citizens or PR's we have no financial help from the government and have already used all of our insurance limits and life savings on the emergency procedures and treatments to date.

We are just a normal hard working small and close family, we don't smoke or drink, we just try to get along with life and want to give our son the gift of a full life. In Singapore we are blessed to be in the hands of the SGH teams.

But affording the care is getting beyond us, and moving a very sick person to the UK or Japan where the treatment might not be available because of the backlog and the Covid exposure is also a risk we feel we shouldn’t take.

We have never asked for help before but are honestly quite desperate now and I don't mind saying I am begging for any help you can offer us and Sam.

For sure I will become a fund raiser and advocate for helping people fight cancer for ever after this.

Anything you can give will be direct to pay SGH and if there is any extra it will go to local children’s cancer charities.

It would fill our hearts with humility if you can help with anything and your help will not go unnoticed we are sure of that.

Please please help us if you can.
