My name is Allen Baker, and I’m convinced we need to do a better job of making disciples of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The Great Commission says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Matt. 28:19-20, ESV, emphasis mine) I see two parts to this command to make disciples: 1) Teach them … all that I have commanded you. This is what Jesus did when he taught His disciples. And 2) Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you. This is how Jesus taught His disciples to walk the walk and live out their Christian faith. I see and hear about lots of enthusiastic evangelism and many conversions around the world, but I don’t see or hear of much effective teaching and training for discipleship.
In the Spring of 2022, I approached my Pastor with a suggestion of how to start a discipleship process at my home church. He and his staff were enthusiastic about my proposal and asked me to lead the effort. So I wrote three handbooks to cover the bulk of the first phase of discipleship: Teaching them all that Jesus taught. I titled these books:
- Getting to Know Your Bible
- Christian Beliefs and Practices
- Glossary of Christian Terms
I wrote them for new Christians who have had little or no exposure to Christians, churches, or the Bible. The books are not specific to any one denomination but are intended for use by all Protestant Christian Churches. We have taught from these handbooks multiple times with great enthusiasm and positive results from both new Christians and seasoned Christians.
Then in the Spring of 2023, it occurred to me that these handbooks could also be useful outside my home church if we could just make them available in a form that other churches, small groups, Bible study groups, and even individuals could use. After considering multiple options, I have settled on commercial publishing in paperback book form. I have presented the first of my three handbooks to Trilogy Publishing, a Christian publishing company that is part of the Trinity Broadcasting Network, and they have accepted it for publication! Now comes the hard part – editing, proofreading, formatting and layout, cover design, production, and marketing. Trilogy Publishing has this process down to a science, and I believe they will produce a quality product. They have the connections to put the books in all the right outlets – both brick-and-mortar and online bookstores and to market the books to their 1.8 million social media followers. However, their services are not free.
Trilogy Publishing charges $5,500 to prepare, produce, distribute, and market each book. If we can get just the first two books published, one after another, then by the time the second one reaches the market there should be enough income from those two to publish the third one (plus the others that I have in my head but haven’t written yet). That’s $11,000 to bootstrap this process and make these discipleship handbooks available to as many Christian churches, small groups, Bible studies, and individuals as possible. In these difficult times, we need strong Christians who know what they believe and why they believe it and who are able to teach and train more disciples. Will you help me get these books published and available to as many Christian churches and individuals as possible?
