Help Mateo Recover After Major Surgery — Urgent Support Needed

My name is Chandra, and I'm the mother of a brave and beautiful 2-year-old boy named Mateo. Mateo was born with severe brain injuries due to Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) and suffers from Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, a rare and hard-to-control form of epilepsy. Every day of his life has been a fight — but no fight has been harder than the one he’s facing right now.

On July 29th, Mateo underwent major reconstructive skull surgery to help relieve pressure on his brain and give him a better chance at development and comfort. We were told recovery would be tough — but nothing prepared us for this. As I write this, Mateo has not yet woken up from surgery. He is stable and has passed neurological exams, but he's still unresponsive. We are living hour by hour, praying for the moment he opens his eyes.

Our family is currently living in a camper. It is not equipped for Mateo’s complex medical needs, and certainly not for the level of recovery and care he now requires. We urgently need to relocate into more stable housing so that Mateo can receive in-home therapies, proper nursing support, and have access to the medical equipment that Medicaid does not cover.

We are also facing mounting travel and lodging costs to stay near the hospital while Mateo is still recovering. Every dollar raised will go toward:

Safe, accessible housing for Mateo’s medical recovery

Travel and lodging expenses to remain by his side in the hospital

Medical supplies not covered by Medicaid

Therapy tools and mobility aids for his long-term care
