Hello all you lovely Humans.
For those of you that have the honour of knowing Nikos Giannakouras, Carrie Dyck and their incredible daughter Iris, you know what a genuine and kind family they are. The are generous and supportive friends. Also fun, they are REALLY fun. It's easy to smile around them. They are infectious :)
It has been immensely difficult for their family to smile as of late. In June of 2019 Carrie was diagnosed with Glioma brain stem tumour. It is inoperable and it is incurable.
Starting in Sept 2019 she began 7 weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Although incurable, the treatments are to try and slow down the growth of the tumour. She was also put on steroids and it was accompanied by almost every negative side effect possible.
Carrie recently fell ill after picking up a virus while her immune system was so low. This caused her to become paralyzed on the left side of her body. They believe the illness caused swelling around her tumour and are hopeful the effects will not last long term.
After weeks in hospital with Nic by her side and a very worried little Iris, Carrie has began to make improvements. She is regaining SOME movement but all of her strength has gone. This would be comparable to a stroke. Carrie is going to need a lot of treatment to learn how to move again. There is possible treatment options in the US they are looking into, but even if she was accepted, there will be costs. She is going to need a lot of helpful from her husband. Currently our gorgeous super star friend is back home but needs help with absolutely every task. If you know her, that's extra hard. Carrie is a strong and independent woman. She doesn't want to need help. Nic hasn't left her side. He will not be able to leave her side nor want to. Nic has to try and support his family, care for his young daughter and care for his ill wife. These are strong people. STRONG people that deserve our love and support.
WE ARE ALSO STRONG. WE ARE A STRONG COMMUNITY!! I am emotional as I write this. Not out of sadness, at this moment out of hope. I KNOW what we are going to be able to do for this family. I know the community we are a part of and what we all mean to each other. I want Nic to be able to take care of his wife and daughter without stress. I want Carrie to be able to focus on her long road of recovery just with this one hurdle let alone her tumour. I want Iris to see her parents less worried and have a happy New Year. Help us. Help us help our friends.
ALL OUR LOVE COMBINED CAN CHANGE THE WORLD.
