2020 has caused many of us to have to stay apart, but for Shane and Darien it brought them closer together. The year began with them getting engaged during a pandemic after thirteen years of being each other's loves. Like the sweetheart he is, Shane planned the perfect surprise proposal at the sight of their very first date. Unable to gather it was an intimate affair, but a truly joyous moment in an otherwise bleak year.

This weekend however, 2020 dealt another blow that led to an impromptu wedding at Rush Hospital. After suffering a seizure at work, the unthinkable was discovered. Shane has been living with a brain tumor that must be immediately removed.
24 hours after receiving the shocking news, Darien and Shane were married with the help of the incredible staff at Rush; and Shane is scheduled for brain surgery on Monday, December 21st.

Their friends and family want to help support them through this bittersweet tragedy. We love Shane's brain and want to keep it safe! Shane is a beloved face all around Chicago as the well-known coffee roaster for Coffee and Tea Exchange and "fix it guy" for many local coffee shops. If you've met him, you love him, and you probably can’t hear enough about how much he loves Darien. He is a truly pure soul, and any little bit you can contribute will be so appreciated by all those supporting his optimistic recovery.

We will not know exactly what Darien and Shane will be dealing with until the doctors biopsy the mass in Shane’s brain on Monday; but we do know there are now many unforeseen expenses coming this newly married couples way. We have set up this Go Fund Me to raise a “recovery & honeymoon fund” in order to help cover medical expenses as well as rent, food and travel, while Shane will be unable to work; and so that Darien can take as much time off as she needs to be by his side. We hope to raise these funds by New Year Day, in order to give Darien and Shane some slight relief during a fearful and unpredictable holiday. Any money left over will be (very hopefully) put to sending them on a real honeymoon, since they only have a mere two days together married, before Shane will be going into surgery.
