We lost our home; searching for another.

Update: Thank you so much to everyone who has shared and donated. Your generosity has been amazing and we can not thank you enough. Unfortunately we're running out of time and still a long way from even putting a deposit on a new place. We haven't given up yet, though.

Original post: My name is Morgan Richards. I am a 41 year old disabled homemaker who is in desperate need of a new home. The short version of the story is that after inheriting my mom's house, we somehow fell through the cracks in the lending system. My partner and I now have 30 days to come up with the funds to find a new place to live, pack up and move. We need help in order to not have us and all of our fur babies living out of our car. I hate asking but this is more than we can do on our own.

The long version: My mother passed away from cancer a few years ago leaving the mortgage to me. Because the total value of her estate at the time was under the required amount, it was never put through probate. The mortgage company said that wasn't a problem so long as we kept paying the mortgage, and that it would simply remain under "estate of" instead of my name. We had them put the mortgage on an auto pay to ensure it wouldn't be a problem.

Fast forward a few years. The pandemic was in full swing when I noticed something wasn't right with our bank account. After doing some digging I realized the mortgage had not been coming out. I called the lender to see what was happening only to be told they no longer had an account by that name or number. Their best guess was that another company now had our loan. In other words, they sold it and didn't have any further information.

I was at a loss, and the only thing I knew to do was wait for some kind of notice in the mail. Of course this was at the point where mailboxes were being broken into and mail stolen, so whether they sent anything or not, we never received anything. The first notice we received was a few weeks ago. This was after some guys showed up at our house and said they were the new owners.

Without our knowledge the house had been put up for auction and sold. The people who bought it went straight for intimidation tactics (sending the sheriff and lying to them about the circumstances) and a lawsuit for eviction. We spent yesterday in court and now have 30 days to pack, find somewhere to live, and move.

Settling utilities, moving costs, and deposits are going to cost thousands. While we may have legal recourse down the road for what happened with the banks, for now we find ourselves facing homelessness.

If you made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read about our problem. If you can and are able to help, we (and our fur kids) would be forever grateful. If you are unable but would be willing to share this link, that would also be incredibly appreciated. Thank you so much!
