Dear Friends, Family and Fans of Ayoka,
Our dear friend - with the biggest heart, best smile, kindest spirit, and a stubborn streak a mile long - finds herself in an unfortunate position at the start of this holiday season.
As many of you know, Ayoka has suffered from back pain for many years. Two weeks ago, after returning from an amazing road trip to North Carolina with her Dad and Khalil, she woke up and couldn't move. Her back was in such pain that she could not get out of bed. She tried the usual regiment of ice and heat and eventually made it for a massage a day or two later. After five days of mind blowing pain (hello stubborn streak!) and little improvement, she finally went to the hospital. Many hours and many tests later, she was told she had a herniated disc, as well as several other degenerative issues with her spine.
She is now facing back surgery at the end of this week. She is hopeful this will take care of most of the pain, but the doctor has told her that there's a possibility of nerve damage that will not be cured by the surgery, and they will be just have to wait and see what the final result will be.
As you can imagine, this is all overwhelming and a bit terrifying. With her enduring optimistic spirit, she's making a plan for her recovery, which includes rallying her community in all it's many forms as best she can. She wasn't thrilled by the idea of asking for money but let's face it, surgery is expensive! She is fortunate to have great health insurance, but there will undoubtedly be medical bills that won't be covered, as well as lots of other expenses she will incur. She won't be able to drive, lift anything, or walk much for weeks to months.
If you're able to donate any amount, large or small, it will be received with all the gratitude Ayoka's huge heart holds. And whether you donate or not, please keep Ayoka in your prayers during these next few weeks.
