We Have a Chance to Help Hank

Hank embodies Hard work and Humility. And through the invisible hand of Hank Evers, our friend played a key role in many of the successful events that drew thousands to Christ Cathedral without seeking any credit or receiving much in rewards. Anyone who has worked for the Church knows, the pay should be called a sacrificial offering (and insurance companies do not renew policies when there is a cancer diagnosis). This appeal is very difficult for the family. Please know that Hank’s circle of friends make this appeal on Hank’s behalf. Many of you have asked: how can we help? Please consider making a contribution.

It’s easy to pinpoint Hank’s handiwork now because cancer has taken Hank out of “rotation”. There are no amazing exhibits like Our Lady of Guadalupe at Christ Cathedral, the dearth of Christ Cathedral mentions or inspired tie-ins with businesses across Southern California. There are none of the community building committees, knit together by Hank, that brought people from across the spectrum. Events conspired to remove him from that employment. Soon after came cancer, draining him and his family of all financial resources as Hank attempted to fight back. Hank’s wife, Lori, has been the primary caregiver. This role has left her unable to “go back to work” COVID or no COVID. Mercifully her workplace, a Catholic high school, has held her job until she can return. This is a great consolation especially in light of cancer’s cruel timing: Hank was chosen to go to Lourdes as a malade with the Knights of Malta. This was a lifetime desire even before the cancer. Days before the August 31th departure, the doctors felt it would be too much given Hank’s deteriorating condition. Hank did not go to Lourdes. He remains valiant. The next anticipated event is the October 16th wedding of their youngest daughter. It is our feverent prayer that Hank can live to see the day.

Hank is also a prolific writer. He blogged: “Since receiving my diagnosis and knowing my days truly are in short supply, the value I place on them, down to each minute, has radically increased . . . I am much more selective on how I spend my time. Now it is abundantly clear that time . . . with God is the most valuable way for me to spend my time. In doing so, I often contemplate my abundant blessings while gaining a deep, profound, and almost indescribable feeling of peace and love. It is here, in a contemplative state, that I feel a well of gratitude for the love of my family and friends. And, it is here, in the silence, that I sense God’s presence.”

Ever optimistic and concerned for others, Hank continues to do God’s work through deep prayer for others. Now more than ever, Hank and Lori need us to continue to storm Heaven with prayer and through this appeal, provide Hank the peace of mind knowing that Lori’s immediate future is secure. Our Lady of Lourdes, hear our prayers for Hank.
