Flora’s Road to Recovery ❤️‍

Hi, as most of you know, I have been doing dog rescue in Belize for over 6 years. I have rescued and fostered over 300 dogs since I began, and over the years I have been able to bring a few to Canada to start their new wonderful lives with friends and family up here.

Last month I flew back to Vancouver bringing with me a beautiful dog named Flora, whose 6 siblings have already found loving homes. While meeting her potential new adopter, she got spooked as I opened the car door and the retractable leash flew right out of my hands. She ran so fast that by the time I ran to look for her she had already disappeared. We looked all day and night and every day after, but no Flora.

11 days later, Flora dragged herself to a farmers yard and they contacted me. I immediately rushed her to the vet. She had the leash tangled around both her back legs and it had cut right to the bone. She had lost over 14 pounds and was severely dehydrated. Her injuries were severe!

Flora went to BC Animal Hospital, then she spent 3 nights at Canada West Trauma Centre in Vancouver before being released to Scottsdale Vet Hospital where she went for daily bandage changes and wound treatment. The daily costs were high, averaging around $600 per visit. I have had some help along the way thanks to donations made by friends, family, and even some strangers!

At some point the treatment cost will (hopefully!) be less when I’m able to start changing her dressings at home. In the meantime, she is now back at Canada West every 2-3 days for the next few weeks. Each visit will be around $300, plus weekly exams, X-rays and consultation fees.
