Help Daniels & Ira Rebuild Community Through Intentional, Connected Caring in Washington, D.C.
“We’re all part of a global community, but what about neighbors helping neighbors?” — Lee Cowan, CBS Sunday Morning
Ward 8 is one of the toughest parts of Washington, DC. Located east of the Anacostia River, it’s a place that has long carried the weight of systemic neglect—struggling with the city’s highest rates of poverty, unemployment, and violent crime. Generations of families here have faced steep barriers to opportunity: underfunded schools, limited access to quality healthcare, and few pathways to good-paying jobs. For many, daily life in Ward 8 means living with uncertainty, grief, and a deep sense of being left behind.
But that’s only part of the story. Ward 8 is also a community of remarkable strength and pride. It’s home to artists, advocates, entrepreneurs, and neighbors who show up for each other every single day. There is a fierce will here—not just to survive, but to build something better. The potential for transformation is real.
At the heart of Woodland Terrace in Ward 8—two extraordinary men are proving that love, trust, and connection can transform neighborhoods and a whole community.
Daniels Flowers and Ira Mathis are former residents of Woodland Terrace, who returned, committed to change. They’re leaders, mentors, neighbors, and bridge-builders. As dedicated full-time Neighborhood Ambassadors with Community Renewal Capital Area (CRCA), they’re connecting with everyone in the community, building and cultivating relationships one by one, and then helping cultivate and grow relationships throughout the community. They’re sharing the power and knowledge of this fundamental and transformational model for renewing community.
They support change in the community, because they have changed. The same streets they knew well and walked in their younger years, they now walk with a different outlook. And now they know the power of neighbors intentionally caring for one another, and they know first-hand how it changes lives. They show up for the community day in and day out, comforting neighbors, organizing events, and sharing the knowledge that the only way forward is together in care. They show and support each individual to renew the social fabric and strengthen the community, one relationship at a time.
Daniels and Ira show others how it’s done by walking the walk. They are a vital part of Community Renewal International’s global mission of “caring together for all the people in the place where we live, and connecting with the whole world as a caring family, where every single person can be safe, loved, and joyfully fulfilled.”
But their work doesn’t run on love alone.
Why We’re Raising $100,000
We are launching this GoFundMe campaign to raise $100,000 to directly support Daniels’ and Ira’s work as they continue building a more connected, safe, and joyful community in Woodland Terrace and across the wider DC metro area. Ira and Daniels’ work in Woodland Terrace demonstrates the power to apply this fundamental and transformational model of community renewal anywhere.

• Community gatherings and neighborhood events
• Youth outreach programs
• Resources and materials for daily outreach and activities
• The growth of the We Care Promise Team model across the entire D.C. metro area
Why It Matters
In neighborhoods like Woodland Terrace—where disconnection, trauma, and mistrust are all too common—Daniels and Ira offer something profoundly rare: compassion, love, and hope. They don’t just talk about community. They live it.
And when one person decides to care—and then another does, and another and caring happens intentionally and collectively—whole neighborhoods begin to heal.
