I hate that I’m even doing this, but we have no other option.
My husband and I became victims of fraud on March 31, 2020. He has lost his job due to coronavirus, and although I am currently on catastrophe pay it is barely enough to buy groceries and gas, and not enough to cover all of our bills.
We had $4,768 stolen from our account, twice as much as what we even had to begin with. Bank of America filed a fraud claim, and a police report was filed, but BoA said that the claim was our fault and would not be refunded, and the police said it might be 1-2 years before the men who stole from us would be caught, and our money most likely wouldn’t be returned to us, and that’s a best case scenario. Of course, this is the worst time for something like this to happen, and the worst time
to ask anyone for money - most Americans are in the same position as us - jobless and no clue how to pay the bills or stay afloat.
Long story short, a couple men approached me in my parked car when I went to BoA to deposit $40 in tips last Friday, March 27. They presented a long sob story that, under normal circumstances, I would hope I would’ve been able to see through. But, because they blamed coronavirus for their situation, I very stupidly agreed to help them cash a check to fix their broken vehicle... Because of this, Bank of America will not refund this money back to our account because it was my fault that this happened. I thought I was helping someone in need. I made an honest mistake, and we don’t have enough to pay for that mistake.
Please, if there is any way you can help, consider donating or sharing with someone who can. I don’t know how we can make it up to you but if there’s any way we can help you, especially in this crisis, please let us know. We are so sorry for asking, but this is our only option.
