The Fred Newman Center (FNC) in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico still needs your help! We are raising $6,500 to continue rebuilding our center, can you help us get there?
Last January 2018 we started a modest fundraiser of $1,600 and with your generosity, we surpassed that mark and raised a total of $3,215.30 that went not only to fix the roof of our center (our original goal), but we also leveled the floor and prepped the space for additional renovations. In that process we started working with the architecture firm Vicious and have created a long lasting relationship with its director. His generosity and skill has allowed us to stretch your donations, and our work has inspired him to come on board to supervise the long-term transformation plan for the center.
Help us continue to bring play, therapy and social change to the U.S.-Mexico border!
Since 2010 the FNC has been a space/ an activity that has brought Social Therapeutics to Ciudad Juarez. During this time, the FNC has been working with NGOs and universities to bring performance and development to the people of the city.
So far, we have created:
Therapy groups: eight social therapy groups both at the FNC, in schools and in community settings lasting for several months.
Educational partnerships: created several community-based programs with college students. We have also been invited to give dozens of social therapeutic workshops with teachers, youth workers, and community organizations.
Trainings: we created the first social therapy online course in Spanish, created a blog and translated articles into Spanish.
International collaborations: In a span of a decade we have organized visits with Dr. Lois Holzman and Dr. Carrie Lobman. We have participated in the Performing the World conference since 2007. Our members are part of the East Side Institute Associates . Most members have been part of an International Class . We are part of the creating and growth of Developing Across Borders .
What is NEW?
In 2018, we began the year with the coming together of the FNC and our colleagues across the border from the Institute for Improvisation and Social Action (ImprovISA—previously known as in2improv). We created Performing Communities de Esperanza, a new coalition that creates resources and training in social therapeutics and performance activism in Spanish and leads performance-based initiatives in Ciudad Juarez and El Paso, Texas.
Since November 2017, following a visit by our friend and mentor Dr. Lois Holzman (see more here by ImprovISA ), we have been holding bi-weekly meetings to grow our binational performance work on the border. This includes a major translation project of Dr. Holzman’s newest book The Overweight Brain. The FNC is the hub that will help further this work.
Why we need your help:
We want to get the Fred Newman Center (pictured below) ready to hold our meetings and social therapy groups led by social therapist Miguel Cortes. We need to raise $5,500 for our phase #2 of construction (see the projected money distribution for this phase here) and $1,000 to cover the legal fees to register as a non-profit organization in Mexico. We are reaching out to you today to help us continue our growth. At the end of this phase the center will be ready to host our activities!

Desde el 2010 el CFN ha sido un espacio/actividad que ha traído la Metodología Socioterapéutica a Ciudad Juárez. Durante este tiempo, el CFN ha estado trabajando con ONGs, OSCs, maestros, padres de familia, niñas y niños, estudiantes, y educadores comunitarios para traer performance y desarrollo a la gente de la ciudad.
Hasta ahora hemos creado:
Grupos de terapia: ocho grupos de terapia tanto en el CFN como en escuelas y entornos comunitarios que han durado varios meses.
Asociaciones educativas: creamos junto con estudiantes universitarios varios programas basados en la comunidad. Hemos sido invitados a dar docenas de talleres de terapia social con maestros, trabajadores juveniles, y organizaciones comunitarias.
Entrenamientos: hemos creado el primer curso en línea en español de terapia social, creado un blog, y traducido artículos al español.
Colaboración internacional: A lo largo de una década hemos organizado visitas con la Dra. Lois Holzman y la Dra. Carrie Lobman. Hemos participado en la conferencia de Performing the World desde el 2007. Nuestros miembros son parte de los Asociados del East Side Institute. La mayoría de nuestros miembros han sido parte una Clase Internacional. Somos parte de la creación y el crecimiento de Developing Across Borders.
